Can someone explain the significance of the city gate? People congregated there in the OT times. I've read in various books about the gate, and wonder what the signifance is.

Gateways used to keep out the bad and let in the good or vise versa. There are modern implications for this as well. Gateways to a city can be literal places that the enemy has a legal spiritual stronghold over a city. Cindy Jacobs book : Posessing the Gates of the Enemy gives a lot of insight into this.
