So many fundamentalists seem to wear it as a badge of honor after they've ridiculed, judged, and condemned others, assuming those others could not possibly know any truth.

We should feel no pride if we feel hatred by some. We should not actively seek to make people hate us. We should not feel justified by others' hatred.

LOL, there are some professions where one must be hated by a bunch of people all the time. It's unavoidable.
When I first joined work seven years ago, fresh from college, the first book I was asked to read was the art of war, a chinese book on war. It was part of the training, and aggressive competitiveness was actively encouraged.
The point is, the OP holds good in civil/residential life.
