I can't understand why the Bible would say that Jesus was rejected in his home town and by his family. It would seem that since both Mary and Joseph received messages from an Angel they would support his claims...

As a matter of fact Mary and Jesus borthers (James and Jude) tried to collect him and take him home thinking he had gone mad and fearing his being put to death. They doubted his divinty ... (Mark 3:20-31)

All true prophets of God are rejected, by their own kinsmen and family,
this is a sure fire way to tell if a person is a real prophet sent my God...

Well you must also remember the atmosphere at the time of all this. Jesus was claiming to be the long awaited Christ, Whose glorious coming would free Israel from all her oppressors and judge the world. What Jesus was claiming, even through amazing miracles, flew against all expectations. A classic study into this dynamics is when He started his ministry, luke chapter 4. He starts out in Galilee in such power! Then we see his sermon in His home town Nazareth, lol, where he boldly and publicly claims to be the Christ, you should read this it's hilarious. Of course the crowd is infuriated! They kick him out, infact they try to kill him. Why? Were they overreacting? Not really. In a word Jesus had just blasphemed, as far as they knew, an offense punishable by death. And this is really the problem here, what the people knew and what Jesus knew. Again look at the sermon in Nazareth, Jesus quotes Isaiah 61, which is a prophecy about the coming of Christ and what He would do, only here is the catch: Jesus quotes only a portion, infact the first part, of that prophecy, and tells them today this (the part He read) scripture is fulfilled. Now heres the catch: no one expected that the prophecies about the coming of the Christ would have two parts, that the were two comings of christ, in two different periods in time, and that not everything would all happen at one coming. That is why Jesus quotes just the first portion, that is what He was here to do. We know this now but The jews would never had known this, and if I were in their shoes I would also not have expected this. Over and above this you have the political climate and all that history, and Now Jesus the self proclamed Christ was not fighting their enemies at all, instead He was fighting their system of living. What Jesus was posing here was alot for most, including His family. This is the context of Jesus's time and His people and His family. This was the reality, and Jesus was going against it, He was against the norm. In our time we would have also called Him crazy. That is why Paul in romans calls it the stumbling of Israel, and that they have not stumbled so to fall. This was part of the plan and at end of it they will be saved. The gifts and callings of God are irrevocable. Lack of knowledge and understanding of the scriptures and history was the results of what we see here. But then again it was part of the plan, the odds were too much to for most to crack this, even His family was not an exception.
