Obama says: American kids spend too little time in school, putting them at a disadvantage with other students around the globe.

Obama says: "But the challenges of a new century demand more time in the classroom."

Obama says: He wants schools to add time to classes, to stay open late and to let kids in on weekends so they have a safe place to go. Really?

Obama and Duncan says: Kids in the United States need more school because kids in other nations have more school. "Young people in other countries are going to school 25, 30 percent longer than our students here," Duncan told the AP. "I want to just level the playing field."

Who's Duncan you ask? Full article here: More school: Obama would curtail summer vacation - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090927/ap_on_re_us/us_more_school;_ylt=AqrDNYBMamtKJJ7ExrbB26 - broken link)

Obama's right.

Take a trip into the top grade schools (tech and B-schools) of America.

You only find students from China, Japan and India dominating the pack. And students from other foreign countries. Someone told me that if not for foreign students, the American higher education industry would collapse and that says it all.

The very mindset of school children here needs to change. Excelling at math and physics should be considered cool and not "uncool" or "nerdy".

Life's more about future and personal wealth. It's just not NFL, celebrities and dating alone.

For one thing, your post says nothing about Christianity so it seems like it should be in the political forum. Other countries are way more educated than we are. (I hate Obama by the way). If Christians don't like the school system there is always homeschool and private school. I did homeschooling with my kids for 2 years. They learned a lot! My special education son went from being 6 years behind in reading to about 2 years. He blew them out of the water when he went in for testing. Anyhow....I think Obama may be right except that they need to come up with better methods for teaching the kids. They need different methods for different learning styles. One problem with schools is that they shove all the kids into the same box and expect them to learn the same.

I have been told that if it weren't for international students, the engineering department at our local university would fold.

If public schools would spend their time on academics as opposed to teaching political correctness and ego enhancement, in-school time might be adequate.

Do any of you know if he will allow the teachings of Christianity back into the classrooms? Could that be a part of the plan? I mean, if the school days are going to be longer and all, maybe they can construct it in a way that it won't interfere with the usual curriculum? I hope so.

Did you know that the "pledge of allegiance" was alter four times and that the words "One nation under God" wasn't in the original "Pledge" until 1954, when so called Christians tried to take over the country, with their Self-righteousness. And we all know where that led this country under Bush.

This is foolish of a Christian to say. What would you do if a muslim was in charge of your child's public school and wanted muslim prayers and teachings? You would be having a cow. If you are not a catholic and a catholic principle wanted your kids to do "hail Mary's" you'd be having a cow. This was actually the opinion of one of my former pastors. He thought that all religion should be kept out of public school. That way there'd be no chance of your kids being taught a "false religion." It really does make sense. Public School = Public Money = No Religion.

And this is coming from the mouth of a "smart" Christian? Can't tell......
