According to Revelation 1:19 ("Write, therefore, what you have seen, what is now and what will take place later.) the past, present, and future relative to the writer who we know is John and written in the 1st century.
Can anyone outline for me the parts of Revelation that are past to the writer, present to the writer, and future to the writer? I am trying to separate them for a better understanding.
1-The things the you have seen: that will be the vision of Christ. That one chapter is very very very important, for it is fundamental. It tells alot about who Jesus is. It is so rich. REMEMBER REVELATION REVEALS THE ANTI CHRIST, ONE WHO IS LIKE A CHRIST, SO FROM THE WORD GO YOU NEED TO KNOW WHO CHRIST IS. Btw on this vision of Christ we spent 3 months doing an inductive study on it, and just discovering the meaning of the description of the elements of christ in this vision. 2- The things that are : the churches. The seven messages were to seven churches that actually existed at that time, and the letters were addressing issues that those churches where dealing with at that present time. However the message to churches is not limited to just the church it is addressed to, but also to all churches throughout all ages that find the spirit speaking them through these messages, as you will see at the end of every letter we are told : he who has an ear let him hear what the Spirit says to the CHURCHES. 3 And then finally " the things that will shortly take place after these things " : and this will be chapter 4 till the end. Now here chapter 4 opens with the angel telling John to " COME AND I WILL SHOW YOU THE THINGS THAT MUST SHORTLY TAKE PLACE AFTER THESE THINGS". And what you see here is the handing out of the title deed of this world, and who becomes lord of all at the end. Now taking the three summaries a step further: 1- have seen = vision of God, could be seen also as the work of Christ. Elements of Christ that have been demonstrated in both old and new testament = what He has done. 2 - things that are : the churches = the church age. And 3 - will take place : end times or the coming of Christ.

John's vision is about things which will take place "in the day of the Lord." John said "I came to be in spirit IN the Lord's day" (Rev.1:10) which is yet future. We have been in man's day (1 Cor.4:3).
a more literal translation of Revelation 1:19 would be:
"Write then, what you perceived, and what they are, and what is about to be occurring after these things."

You might want to re-check your screen name and what Eusebius thought:
EUSEBIUS Bishop of Caesarea (c. 265 - 340) Extract from the 'Theophania'
"All authorities concur in the declaration that "when all these things should have been done" "The End" should come : that "the mystery of God should be finished as he had declared to His servants the prophets" : it should be completed : time should now be no more : the End of all things (so foretold) should be at hand, and be fully brought to pass : in these days should be fulfilled all that had been spoken of Christ (and of His church) by the prophets : or, in other words, when the gospel should have been preached in all the world for a testimony to all nations, and the power of the Holy People be scattered (abroad), then should the End come, then should all these things be finished. I need now only say, all these things have been done : the old and elementary system passed away with a great noise; all these predicted empires have actually fallen, and the new kingdom, the new heaven and earth, the new Jerusalem--all of which were to descend from God, to be formed by His power, have been realized on earth; all these things have been done in the sight of all the nations ; God's holy arm has been made bare in their sight: His judgments have prevailed, and they remain for an everlasting testimony to the whole world. His kingdom has come, as it was foretold it should, and His will has, so far, been done; His purposes have been finished; and, from that day to the extreme end of time, it will be the duty, as indeed it will be the great privilege of the Church, to gather into its bosom the Jew, the Greek, the Scythian, the Barbarian, bond and free; and to do this as the Apostles did in their days--in obedience, faith and hope.'
Thanks to everyone.. while reading revelation I guess I missed the obvious headers before the chapters.. I was hoping for a new revelation (LOL of my own) but alas.. back to preterism...
