At that time Jesus went through the grainfields on the Sabbath. His disciples were hungry and began to pick some heads of grain and eat them. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to him, "Look! Your disciples are doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath."
He answered, "Haven't you read what David did when he and his companions were hungry? He entered the house of God, and he and his companions ate the consecrated bread—which was not lawful for them to do, but only for the priests. Or haven't you read in the Law that on the Sabbath the priests in the temple desecrate the day and yet are innocent? I tell you that one greater than the temple is here. If you had known what these words mean, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice,' you would not have condemned the innocent. For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath."
Matthew 12:1-8

  • Romans 3:19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
  • Galatians 3:23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25 But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster.
  • Exodus 24:12 And the LORD said unto Moses, Come up to me into the mount, and be there: and I will give thee tables of stone, and a law, and commandments which I have written; that thou mayest teach them.
  • 2 Corinthians 3:7 But if the ministration of death, written and engraven in stones, was glorious, so that the children of Israel could not stedfastly behold the face of Moses for the glory of his countenance; which glory was to be done away.
  • 2 Corintians 3:11 For if that which is done away was glorious, much more that which remaineth is glorious.
  • Romans 7:1 Know ye not, brethren, (for I speak to them that know the law,) how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth?
  • Romans 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held; that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.
  • 1 Timothy 1:9 Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers.
  • Galatian 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself
  • Luke 5:39 No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

It is lawful to show mercy and do good on the sabbath --but we must not be paid for the good that we do.

The priests that served in the temple did not receive payment for their service. They were from the tribe of Levi and the tithes and food they received were their inheritance. (They received them whether they served or not.)

In matters regarding the sabbath, Jesus was guiltless. He is Lord of the sabbath. He sanctified the seventh day at a creation and gave the Sabbath Commandment at Mount Sinai. Certainly, he knew how to keep it holy and was without sin --or we would not have a saviour.

Satan hates the seventh day sabbath because it honors Jesus by whom all things were created. The sabbath commandment makes a distinction between the Creator of the heavens and the earth and all the gods of the heathen. When we remember the sabbath and keep it holy, we give the world our testimony that our God is the Creator!

Absolutely little elmer our sabbath is in Him .

There is a place of quiet rest,
Near to the heart of God.
A place where sin cannot molest,
Near to the heart of God.

O Jesus, blest Redeemer,
Sent from the heart of God,
Hold us who wait before Thee
Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of comfort sweet,
Near to the heart of God.
A place where we our Savior meet,
Near to the heart of God.

There is a place of full release,
Near to the heart of God.
A place where all is joy and peace,
Near to the heart of God

Near to the Heart of God

Hebrews 8:8
But God found fault with the people and said : "The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.

Hebrews 8:13
By calling this covenant "new," he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and aging will soon disappear.

This new covenant is found in grace, not by observing the law.
