The priest at today's mass went on to tell a joke during the sermon.

Here's what was written in a grave back in the north east:
Here lies so and so, an atheist, all dressed up and nowhere to go.

The packed congregation erupted in laughter and the guffaw went on for 30 to 40 seconds.

Is atheism a subject of ridicule in American social circles? Is that why the folks are so angry and bitter?

You learn new things every day. Personally, I could not laugh coz I did not see any humour in the priest's joke, though I really find stuff that atheists do pretty hilarious

Most priests have a way of lowering their voices as they say the punch line so you can't hear it! This post just reminded me to look at the clock. A reminder to my daughter that she needs to off to Mass! Thanks, Tony!

That they do. It's amazing how good they are at giving speeches and shooting jokes in between.

When I was growing up, I used to skip sermons and go to the coffee shops to be get biscuits, only to be busted by my Dad and his posse

Oh by the way, which church does your daughter go to?? <runs for his life>

Nah. Personally, that kind of stuff doesn't bother me. I'm all about having a good sense of humor so in that kind of situation I try to examine the ability of the joke to make me laugh (the creativity, punchline, etc...) more than I do the content of it.

Also, as an aside, despite my contempt for the Catholic Church, I find it to be an organization less scornful of Atheists than many of the Evangelical movements. Thus, I also realize the content of the joke and where it was "coming from." If it was, say, a Southern Baptist Church, I would be more inclined to think of it as not only a joke but a joke made with the buttress of "We're better than you." Once jokes enter the realm of trying to put oneself on a grander hierarchy over someone else it can indeed become offensive and that is more likely the attitude that drives most Atheists nuts. At least, that's what drives me nuts and makes me angry and bitter toward the caricature of religion.

Eh, I wouldn't have laughed either. It's more of a mean spirited thing to say than a joke, though I do admit it's kinda clever...

Of course remember that if atheists had churches I'm sure their "minster" or whoever they call the person who speaks would make jokes about christians! And they probably wouldn't be all that funny either- devout atheists are about as funny as devout christians...

Coming from a devout atheist - it was a funny joke and I would have laughed. This assumes the intent was just a joke and not a put down.

We all have different concepts of humor..I probably would not have laughrd..

I sat in a church for many, many years hearing insults disguised as jokes to every religion, especially the Baptists, Catholic and Islamists..

I dunno, but I just can't see my Lord laughing about that either..When members of His Church meet for worship maybe they need to focus on Him, instead of the members meeting down the road or across town...
