Cincinnati's Weather (Hamilton, Warren, Kent: homes, neighborhood, tornado)

Hello,
I am considering a move to Cincinnati. I am concerned about tornadoes. I checked a few other threads and some said this city gets hit the most out of Ohio. Please, if anyone can offer clarity, it will be appreciated.

I've never heard of Cincy getting hit by a tornado. But, I will admit I'm no Cincy historian, either.

Te weather will be very comparable to what you currently xperience in Charleston straight down the line. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!

In the last 10 years in the Cincinnati area, Xenia, Ohio, has been hit once, and Blue Ash, Ohio, has been hit once, so not much to worry about.

I've lived in Cincinnati my entire life and there haven't been tornadoes very often. Right now I can only think of two. One in Hartwell decades ago and the 1999 one that hit my neighborhood. Everyone that got to their basement or bathroom survived - four died. I'd be more concerned about auto accidents than tornadoes. Really tornadoes are not worth worrying about - when the siren goes off go to your basement.

There's always a threat, but tornadoes around Cincinnati really are rare. It's not a reason to avoid living in the area.

You learn to recognize when there's a real threat ... and learn to ignore the constant shrieking alarms of the TV weather folks as well.

Last year I remember there was a funnel cloud in the outlying areas of Northern Kentucky and a severe thunderstorm that maybe produced some tornadoes out past the Northern suburbs in Butler or Warren? Something like that. Nothing really severe and nothing near the city. I wouldn't worry about it.

Correct--Hartwell was hit by a tornado in 1969...but we have a lot of homes with basements and a tornado siren system which is completely getting redone in Hamilton County (which is the COunty Cincinnati is located in). I was a child when the xenia tornado hit, and I remember it well, that is a big reason I fear tornados as well...but you will be fine, dont let that deter you!

It seems that we have to worry about hurricanes more than tornadoes!
Last year the hurricane ripped off 40 % of my shingles and caused about $5,000 in damage.

You're right. The tornado that almost wiped out Hartwell didn't do that much damage.
