Haha, okay so this is a little strange...but I have had this inkling lately to hear some organ music in a church. Christmas season of like 2007 or 2008, my mom, dad, GF, and I went to St. Cecilia's sometime in December and got to hear 45 mins of organ music...it was amazing, and obviously left a mark on me since I recall it and want more.

So, aside from going to regular church services, I have been wondering if say there's just an open door weekday night when someone is practicing, tuning, whatever...an organ and people are allowed to listen? Seems like a stretch but I wanted to ask cuz I really want to hear it.

How's that for a random Friday afternoon post?

It might be difficult to find a place where you could just wander in and find someone practicing (although a place that comes to mind where you could ask if the organist has a regular practice time is St. Peter in Chains) but there are a couple of good organ recital series in town. Probably the best attended is the one at Hyde Park Community Methodist (would give you a link, but their server is apparently down) and it's free. There is a great series at the Museum Center, too and will probably be updated for the next season soon:

And if you'll check the "Events" page of the Cincinnati Chapter, American Guild of organists page pretty often, they post a fairly comprehensive list.

Although the summer months are pretty slow, expect to find a lot available--usually on Sunday afternoons and usually free--other months of the year.

For my money, if you want to hear about the best organ music in a church service, visit Christ Church Cathedral, the Episcopal cathedral downtown.

I don't know how often they use them but there were three pipe organs at St. Peter in Chains Cathedral at one time. I would call down there first.

I would also call the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music as at one time, they were heavily into organ music (and a lot of the older liturgical music).

I had a cousin who as a teenager would slip into a few parishes and play the organ for a couple of hours for the heck of it. The music greatly varied by who was in the church.
