I remember those wing dings. My parents would shop for groceries at that Rinks store and bring home wing dings. They were awesome. I remember that Rinks had a great music department. They had many name brand guitars, amps, etc.

The text of Hy Ullner's obituary, presumably as it appeared in the Enquirer in 2007 (the obituary no longer appears on the Enquirer site), is posted on a fan site for early TV Horror Hosts.
According to the obituary, Hy Ullner:

- started Rinks with his brother. His first merchandise included 5,000,000 Army-surplus sleeping pills.
- represented Pete Rose in contract negotiations with the Reds
- purchased the old Beverly Hills Country Club and reopened it as a dinner theatre. A year later, it was sold to the Richard Schilling. It later became the Beverly Hills Supper Club.

When they got their money from the Rinks sale, Hy went on to squander his share on various failed projects, repeatedly getting himself in jams. Coleman retired to Florida and lived the dream life of beach and dining, collecting art from the local artists and entertaining his family. Two very different men, for sure.

I found these three pictures at the Columbus Library and I remembered this thread. This is the store at Brice Road and Livingston Avenue in Reynoldsburg.

There aren't very many pictures of Rink's stores around, so I thought I would share.

Does anyone remember a woman named Eleanor Kaye Moore people called her Poochie. She worked at Rinks in the early 70s before it closed I'm assuming. Would love to know more about her time there

I worked at both Rinks Bargain City's in Toledo. I love working there and after my divorce working for them is how I supported my kids. Don't know what I would have done if not for them. That was 37 years ago.

I barely remember going to Rinks but I know that we went on Sundays after church and then we headed down to White Castle hamburger in Covington Kentucky. I’m now 70.

I barely remember going in the one on Burlington Pike in Florence in the early 80’s. It was a dirty store full of junk.

I remember Rinks well. They had a store in the small Ohio town I lived in as a kid. Pretty neat store when you’re a kid!

RINK'S / BARGAIN BARN / BARGAIN CITY

A vacant skating rink in Hamilton, Ohio was acquired by Cincinnati's Coleman and Hyman Ullner. They reconfigured it as a discount department store, known as Rink's, which was dedicated in 1951. Branch stores soon opened in the Cincinnati suburbs.

Much more on the history in the article
