I'm going to be blunt, your going to be VERY disappointed in Cincinnati. Imagine DC in the late 90s when the city was still very dangerous but it was just starting to revitalize, that's where Cincinnati is today. Expect at least 10 years before Cincy gets anywhere near what DC has become. Oh and no good transit too, a barely adequate bus system that can get you from around the university to downtown effectively but not so much anywhere else.

Not only that but the dating scene is miserable for anyone over 23. Basically everyone knows everyone else and its very hard to find new people that aren't connected to people you already know. People tend to marry early, like literally out of college early and things become quite slim after that time.

that freakin explains many trepidations .... jeez .. how do you expect night clubs and bars to be in business when people cannot reliably travel back to their homes ?? what do the administration expect public to do ? drink and drive ?? ...... its absolute no no in my world .. cause its not "if", its just "when" you do the jail time. .... what I heard is that inside DC there is a zero tolerance BAC legal policy followed.
Well that's a problem isn't it, along with the fact that there isn't that good a transit down here (I'm visiting family now so I can say here), you just have to deal with it. You can btw (though didn't used to until lately with the beginnings of revitalization) hail a taxi pretty easy downtown, outside of downtown it gets much harder. People call taxi's when they need them, which is a pain but such is the way of Cincy. Though I have to admit, it used to be harder to get taxi's downtown even, but lately people are moving into downtown and nightclubs etc are back so its better than it used to be...

I say a ton of bitter things in this thread, not wanting to give you a false impression of the city. However, I do feel Cincinnati has enormous potential to become a place that a bit more like DC, NY or Chicago, its got the built environment of an real honest to God city (dense rowhouses, large old tenement buildings), but it needs a major attitude adjustment (particularly with regards to transit and urban living - though both are kind of transitioning to something more desirable for people like you) until it would be the kind of place I'd love to see it be. Downtown and Mt. Adams is starting to feel like a walkable place, but many amenities you'll be used to like say a good grocery or a lot of places to eat late at night aren't there yet.

You will have to settle with less of what you desire if you move to Cincy. Though fighting the good fight for said things could be fun

Thanks for the honest assessment bro.... but I tend to look at things positively... A person can either see the glass half empty or half full ..... when someone says there is 80% chance of rain, you can always see that there is still 20% chance of sun shine ... When I saw the photos of Cinci ... it floored me ... what an amazing location ... just by the river .. small hills .. connected through bridges ..... what a high potential .. a good governance can make it whatever they can want it to be .... not many cities have that luxury .... the elements which are needed are open mindedness ... can do attitude .... thinking out of the box through the lens of economics and not fear ....incentives for the best and brightest minds from all over the world to open businesses ....... .. either you can make it better than SFO or Seattle or worse than Detroit .. the choice is yours ....... ( it bothers me when you said that the young folks tend to marry quickly .... damn .... not always but often times those are signs of puritanism .. risk averseness.. fear of unknown .. lack of ambition)

Just a funny brain wave ... don't be too harsh on me .......... .. why not the city council instead of pouring tons to money in law enforcement and reactive measures .... buy some good old americana made taxi cabs from up North and give it to the young not-so-fortunate young folks ..... provide them with an opportunity for an honest living instead of pushing them towards drugs and thuggery ..... open entertainment districts ...... have calculated marketing campaigns to bring the lazy people out of their couches and houses and make them spend money ...... Beauty of opportunity and capitalism .......

I couldn't help but combine commentary from the back-to-back posts of these two observant and concerned Cincinnati visitors--their combination of negative and positive remarks added insight we needed to hear.

Back to school for you.

Capitalism is not optimized or even reflected, or or even visible in a plan where "the government buys taxi cabs and gives them to young people." Trust me on this. That notion that you expressed is exactly our problem. It is exactly why we have an underclass and why we are headed for European style socialism, never to recover. If you could blot those kind of thoughts from your mind you might, just might, become part of the solution instead of part of the problem.

I wouldn't mind some "european style" jobs, medical care, or schools. How can we get some of those?

Socialism is always fun until you run out of other peoples money to spend. Then they kill each other and burn things for a few years and start over. Good luck with that.

It's virtually inevitable that most threads on City-Data will degenerate into a political debate/discussion.

I think, given the extremely low quality of life for many of our citizens, we should be a little more hesitant to proclaim knowledge of ultimate truth.
