I-75 and I-71, both carried by the Brent Spence are Federal Highways. Then you have both the states of Kentucky and Ohio in the act.

Going to be a lot of hollering over it, but in my opinion the states and therefore cities will not have much to say in the final result. It is a Federal Highway and one of the most traveled commercial corridors in the country. The Feds will call the final shots. Oh yes, they will consult with various state and local agencies but the final result will be decided by them as they will also likely be footing the majority of the bill.

I don't see much to be gained by including it in Cincinnati development news, as it really impacts all the way from Michigan to Florida. But the main reason is it is a Federal not a Cincinnati development.
I disagree. Road projects affect traffic demand which affects where people live. For example, when they widen 75 in the City, traffic will clear up for a while and the commutable range to downtown will expand, thereby encouraging more development on up the 75 corridor.

It's all connected, man. The interstate system was never intended to give the USA the most unique development pattern in the world (enormous footprint, low density metro areas) but that is what happened.

WRONG. The "feds" aren't calling the shots because that's how things have been done under law since the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1962. This is what established OKI and similar agencies nationwide. In fact the Interstate Highway System wasn't built by the federal government at all. It was built by the states with allocations from the national gasoline tax, which existed previously as a 3-cent tax but was redirected after 1956 into the newly created Federal Highway Trust Fund. Most states had to pay a 10% match except the wasteland western states, who only had to pay 5%, the rationale being that those remote highways crossed wastelands owned by the federal government.

People act as if the interstate highway system was some great marker of American Exceptionalism, but really it was just the auto industry tricking the public.

Are you ever pro anything large industries do within this country? I guess you find P&G to be a parasite on Cincinnati. How was the interstate highway system created by the auto industry? I think Eisenhower was a military man. Of course I do believe the Republicans ran him for President. So I guess that makes him a pawn of the auto industry?

I am old enough to remember the pre-interstate days. Without the interstates this country would resemble Africa as far as commerce expansion is concerned. I guess the railroad barons would have the public good much more in mind?

Get with it, the interstate highway system is the main reason we have the daily level of life we do have in this country. The greatest and most varied food supply in the world. Access to the greatest variety of goods in the world. The reason every automotive manufacturer in the world concentrates on our market. The interstates are the commercial backbone of this country.

I'm not a moderator, but I vote we steer clear of the pro/cons of the interstate highway system topics on this thread........(maybe create a new thread if it's that important to everyone?????).

Hi kjbrill--

Yep, this little set of facts is completely lost on the rabid anti-road advocates out there. I wonder if they've ever seen those stickers on the back of semi's that say "Good stuff, Trucks bring it."

The number one thing that keeps all of those little shops in Downtown/OTR/CUF/insert neighborhood here is the nationwide ROAD network that allows all those diverse supplies to be brought in. Coffee from Indonesia, milk creamer from Pennsylvania, the plastic cuppies from Georgia, you get the idea.

But that's completely lost on more than a few people when they oppose road expansion.
