We're getting a submarine! At least part of one.

USS Cincinnati will be coming home | Cincinnati - WLWT Home

It will be a neat attraction and addition to the riverfront. It will arrive this year and be ready by the All-Star game.

The original goal was to get the whole submarine and dock it on the river. Since their are still parts of the sub that are classified, the Navy did not want to give it up.

Excellent news... although it would be nice if we could get the whole submarine and could increase our Russian and Chinese tourism business.

So the question is, will this be permanent? According to the article it will be here "later this year" and "in time for the All-Star Game", which sounds like it will be around for at least a couple years.

Yes, it will be a permanent attraction to the riverfront.

And as for the Navy not wanting to give us the entire sub because parts of it are "classified" ... give me a break. Air Force One, of all things - the most recent decomissioned AF1 that carried presidents Kennedy through Clinton - is on full display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton. Is that not "classified"?

As if the Soviets are going to come to The Banks to try to get some schematics from the USS Cincinnati's interior ... a ship that was mothballed 17 years ago and has been sitting in a Washington scrap heap ever since.

The Soviet Union no longer exists so I guess we're off the hook.

Even though the ship has been mothballed for a while doesn't mean that every major component or system in the boat is outdated. My brother was an Officer on a LA Class Fast Attack Sub during his stint in the Navy and I know that he would say that there are parts of the boat that are still being used and have not become outdated even though the boat is being scrapped. Could be the weapons systems, sonar, propulsion system etc. that is still being used in many other submarines in use today and likely contains proprietary and yes, classified designs.

The Soviet comment was tongue-in-cheek.

I'm saying if Air Force One can go on display after having classified items removed, why can't the same be true for USS Cincinnati? I mean, I've been in parts of the White House as a tourist, for crying out loud. Is that not classified? Take out the sensitive materials from the sub and go from there. It won't happen and I'm not sure how a full submarine would even fit into our riverfront, but the Navy is being too cautious here.

Yeah, it's definitely a shame we don't get the whole thing. When I was in San Diego, I toured the Maritime Museum there which included a Russian submarine and it was an incredible experience. Wikipedia says the whole thing is only 360 feet long, so that would be approximately equal to the current coastline of the Smale Riverfront Park, so I really doubt it would be a problem to have a permanent installment somewhere along the river.

To add to that, wouldn't it be great to have a similar maritime museum with this, a classic steamboat, the Majestic, and a a few other interesting boats from Ohio river history (I don't really know my boat history, so maybe an old barge or a replica of a 19th Century ferry, etc.)

It wouldn't take any valuable land-space, add some year-round tourism, and be something interesting to do for the locals as well.

Yes, these ideas are genius. Bring something unique like subs and steam boats to the Banks gives solid reasons for people across the region and surrounding towns like Louisville, Columbus and Indy to visit. I think the restaurants at the Banks are really nice, but let's face facts, there's a lot of nice restaurants in most every town.....but other towns don't have subs and steamboats on a major river-----only Cinti does. Now build a boat harbor, like they're supposed to, and put some street vendors and a few carnival rides 1 month during the summer down there, and you have a seriously happening place.

Air Force one is only a plane and not used for military purposes. No doubt it has defense mechanisms installed to protect those on board and some of that gear is likely classified but I doubt it has any offensive capabilities like a Submarine.

The White House is not likely to contain any object or system of military importance. It's a house. Therefore the only classified things you might find around here is likely paperwork of some type. But actual equipment? Not likely unless they have some kind of sophisticated communications gear that they need to keep under wraps. Easy to hide that from the public.

When it comes to the defense of this country it is best to err on the side of caution. Every enemy of this nation has a spy network and they would love to get their hands on a lot of our plans or components for the offensive and defensive capabilities of a newer nuke sub.
