While you're at Wright Patterson, make sure to visit the Air & Space Museum (it's free, too). I could spend a month in there looking at all the aircraft----great WW1 and WW2 aircraft, which I believe includes the Enola Gay.

I would believe it should be a good facility to practice, though I believe the rifle ranges would be somewhat limited in distance, just dictated by the restraints of WPAFB's location. Today it has restrictions due to the fact it is practially in downtown Dayton.

The Enola Gay, which dropped the fat man atomic bomb on Hiroshima, is actually on permanent display at the National Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C.

The Bockscar, which three days later dropped a similar bomb on Nagasaki, is on permanent display at the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton. It is one of the most significant planes on display in Dayton.

Both are B-29s.

And I'll agree with visiting the Air Force museum in Dayton; it is one of this area's (Cincinnati-Dayton) best attractions and is something that other cities would love to have. And any visit to the museum should definitely include a visit to the Presidential Gallery, which features many of the presidents' former planes including the most recent Air Force One to be retired. You have to get there early though and put your name in, since the Presidential Gallery is only accessed by shuttle bus and is high-security.

I'll certainly be sure to have a look around the museum, it certainly does sound worth a look. I'm hoping to get up there twice a week so that should give me plenty of opportunity to have a good look around.

Apologies if I'm missing something .. this is WPAFB - off I-675 - on the Western edge of Dayton, near BeaverCreek, right??

Just curious - are there 2 different facilities?? I'm still newish here, but I've visited a friend at the one next to BeaverCreek, and - from my perspective - that's no where near downtown Dayton.

Not trying to cause trouble .. just wasn't sure if this was meant as hyperbole, or if there are multiple locations of the base spread throughout the Dayton area.

Sorry to interrupt... carry on...

Sorry, it is still inside of the I-675 loop. For a major AFB to be a close as it is to downtown Dayton, in my estimation it is practically in downtown Dayton.

It's not really near downtown Dayton in any meaningful way. The museum itself is directly off I675 and is accessible to 99 percent of people who go there from 675. To get to downtown Dayton, the best way is to take Route 4 or even 35. It would be about 15 minutes away.

Ya, it's a little ways from downtown. In fact, it's not even in city limits.

So you expect a major AFB to be inside city limits?
