I have discovered a new wonder of the world and it is Sunlite pool ! How did I not notice it before. Our family loves swimming pools and this one is amazing. I thought the world's biggest flat pool wa at a hotel in South America.

I shudder to think what happens when when is flooded with river water.

Do people swim in the river ?

Does anyone remember being at King's Island when they filmed the Brady Bunch pilot on opening day in 1973 ?

Sunlite Pool is still my epitome of a swimming pool. Yes it was a setback when the spring river floods engulfed it. But that was minor compared to the damage endured by the rest of the Coney Island park, and the reason Kings Island was built.

I have related more than once that while I was going to college at UC and dating my wife, our summer Saturdays would often consist of getting to Sunlite Pool when it opened, spending the day, changing clothes, having supper, and going to Moonlight Gardens for a night of dancing. Still say if there was a better date day/night anywhere I want to know where it was.

I had a 2nd cousin who was very successful in business. It literally took him around the world. During the season, when Moonlight Gardens was in operation, he had a close circle of friends who would attend more than once a week when he was in the country. He proclaimed it was the greatest moonlite dance floor in the country. I got to experience it prior to the decline, and agree. Where else could you dance to a big band, and during their intermission go out and take a couple of rides on the Shooting Star before the amusement park shut down? For those kind of romantic memories, Kings Island can't hold a candle to it.

You swim in the river at your own risk. I know several people water ski on the river, but not too many actually swim in it. But if you follow some other threads on this forum, Cincinnati Water Works is known for some of the best tap water in the US. The water is of course drawn from the Ohio River. Unless they have the most advanced filtration plant in the nation, which they may have, the river water must not be all that bad.

Sorry to say, I was not at KI on opening day in 1973. But one of my high school classmates bid on the paving project for the entire park, parking lot, walkways, the whole nine yards. He was in total shock when he got the contract, as several other bidders had gone for piecemeal portions. But he took that contract to the bank and secured a loan for the equipment required for the project. It propelled him from a one old dump truck and small roller outfit in the residential asphalt driveway business to a boneafided bidder on significant roadway projects. So my early memories of KI also have a personal touch.

Some years ago KI was concerned the township they were in had a petition to incorporate a portion of it into a city. That eventually fell through, but it was sufficient to propel KI to request annexation to Mason, an established city and one they felt more comfortable with tax wise, et cetera. Mason was of course very pleased to welcome their annexation.

On occasion, I still take my grandkids to Sunlite Pool so they can see what a real swimming pool looks like. Even though it is 40 years later and much has changed, I am glad to see Sunlite Pool is still operating. The water park at KI is nice, but it is no Sunlite Pool.
