Shee-it. For the most part I'm all about taking slurs out of team names and shutting down stereotype-mocking gestures and chants like the "tomahawk chop" and "Who Dey." But there's not a dang thang wrong with the Mohawk Motor Co (the dealer's original name) mascot. The petitioners would've had a case if the character was part of a TV ad campaign with slogans along the lines of, "Heap big deals," "Stop by and say 'how'," "Our prices will make you go woo woo woo," and so on. But he isn't so they don't.

It reminds me of the brouhaha stirred up when a photo of a tennis court sign "went viral" along with howls accusing racism. Why? Because the most easily visible words on the sign were "Whites Only." A slight zoom-in revealed that right below those words were the words "to be worn." A snooty club's rules insisted that members not take the court unless they'd donned "tennis whites." The sign was to that effect and had nothing to do with access being limited to Caucasians.

Yours Truly got caught in the cross-hairs of the PC Police once upon a time. A local forum in my adopted hometown had a thread underway about a perennial favorite topic: bashing the mass transit system. Posters were invited to share pet peeves. So I wrote that one of mine was "Asians who hack and spit all over subway stations." Paying no attention to there having been no comma between the first and second words, self-righteous holier-than-thou types piled on me for racial animosity that didn't exist.

I'd love to someday see a dealer of "pre-owned" Priuses put up a statue outside their business, of a 60-something Caucasian woman with stringy gray hair + dangling earrings + glasses + a scarf + "peasant clothes" + thick socks + Birkenstock sandals and carrying a Whole Foods bag in one hand and a rolled-up yoga mat in the other. "Take Hamilton past Chase to Granola Granny's smiling face!"

In South Dakota, a few years back, a white woman filed suit against a South Dakota tribal high school requesting that they no longer use the sports nickname "Sioux". The tribe countered that they did not consider the name of their tribe to be derogatory.

It went nowhere as the case was referred to a tribal court as the state court did not have jurisdiction.

There is never qn end to it.

I would tell the Indians it's better to be publicly acknowledged as "tough warriors" like the Washington Redskins and the FSU Seminoles do than to not be acknowledged at all. Their biggest threat is to be even more forgotten about....not some football/baseball fans doing the war chant.

Until these same people unite against images of fat men in lederhosen with a beer in one hand and a pretzel in the other, I give them no credibility.

Jim Tarbell has never said that bothers him.

We should probably ban Santa Claus while were at it. He's a gross characterization of Saint Nicholas.
