This is equal parts heartbreaking and infuriating.
I don't call that section of the city Woes Lawn for nothing. Not along ago an ATM technician who had no access to money was killed when he showed up to service a machine, AND a 9-year-old girl was molested, in the exact same vicinity. And that's what invariably gets overlooked - and why I'm an outspoken (and likely outnumbered) supporter of the community. Besides a low but still too high number of property crimes, nearly everything bad around there occurs along Reading Road late at night or in one of two fringe areas. Losantiville Ave and Eastlawn Dr - the dead-end portion leading to Roselawn Park - is within where these senseless incidents took place. The other pocket to avoid unless you're up to no good is along Summit (aka "Slummit") Road and the blocks of derelict apartment houses on its side streets leading north - beyond which, improbably, is a hemmed-in niche of homes constructed between the 1940's and '60s that shows little sign of decay or turmoil.
What bears emphasizing is that people in Roselawn STILL CARE about what goes on in their neighborhood and aren't afraid to show it. Farther down Reading Road the "no snitching" law of the streets may be in effect, but there someone risked (and received) injury to himself trying to assist the victim and other folks didn't hold back from speaking their minds to reporters. Therein lies the key to putting the brakes on any further deterioration and keeping the remaining nice parts nice.

Naturally, most who saw the headline turned the page with a muttered "Roselawn, it figures" or had the same thought when they hit the remote as the TV news story began. They're more concerned with the latest breathless horrified account of Amanda or Jason from the suburbs getting relieved of their smartphone near UC.

The guy that murdered the Atm Tech. had severe mental issues. I'm guessing the same will be the case here.

Miminizing the armed robbery spree in the UC area isn't going to bring back this nice old lady.

As for Roselawn, I presented a plan at their community council to rid Roselawn of its most serious problem a few years ago, along with a street crime activist who's name i cannot remember. They were more interested in their hopes of getting a hotel for the corner of Summit and Reading than kicking Club Ritz out. The folks that dominate the Roselawn council don't really care about this street crime.
