Hey,

So I've been kicking the idea around in my head for a while to do a Cincy and Dayton City-Data meetup. At the VOA (Voice of America) museum. Here's a link to its page:
The National Voice of America Museum of Broadcasting - West Chester, OH - Cincinnati

To those who don't know, the VOA was a program by the US Government during World War II to blast pro-America sediment into Axis power countries. It was effective, enough that this specific radio facility got cursed by Adolf Hitler himself.

Quote:
During the height of World War II, President Franklin Roosevelt turned to the innovative engineers of the Crosley Broadcasting Corporation to build powerful short wave radio transmitters capable of delivering broadcasts overseas. On farm fields near Crosley's WLW facility, six 200 kilowatt transmitters and 24 directional reentrant rhombic antennas were built and on September 23, 1944, the Voice of America Bethany Station was dedicated. The first broadcast was directed at Nazi Germany and began with, "We shall speak to you about America and the war. The news may be good or it may be bad, but we will tell you the truth." For more than fifty years, the Voice of America Bethany Station delivered "truthful news" to the people of Europe, Africa, South America, and parts of Asia, despite some like Adolf Hitler who referred to the VOA as those "Cincinnati Liars." New technology and budget cuts resulted in the silencing of the Bethany Station in 1994.

The plan I have in my head as of now would be to go to the VOA museum and then possibly grab food/drinks afterwards at Milano's or somewhere else at the shopping center next door. To do the latter I would need a head count to reserve a room, and a decision on a restaurant (again, I recommend Milano's because they have killer good pizza and subs, but Fricker's, Marion's, BW3s, etc. are all close by and good, inexpensive options).

If you wondering where the idea came from, thank kjbrill! Once in a thread he alluded to the idea of having a meetup at the museum, and gosh darnit it's a great idea! I've always wanted to see that place. Also I'd be willing to bet most all of you would be interested in this museum while no one at Miami would be. (actually, I might have a couple friends that would like it, but prob not haha).

Cost to go is $5 to the museum, and the tour would be on a Saturday afternoon in March. If I remember correctly it would be the third Saturday. If you live without a car, get an Uber! I did a cross-post to the Dayton page too. Here's a link:

Anyways, please let me know if you think this is a good idea and if you would attend! If you don't like the idea or would not want to attend or not be able to attend, it is ok! Just let me know with a comment or direct message.

We will need to see how things are going by the third Saturday in March. I have wanted to check out the VOA for a number of years now. And another good, reasonable place we go to when in the area, although they aren't real large and don't have a separate meeting room or alcohol is McAlister's Deli.

Don't give up even if there's only the two of you. If I were 20 years younger I'd be there.

^Thanks for the replies, rrtechno and CP!

Looks like I'll be staring a DM campaign to all the regulars. So expect a direct message from me soon. I can only DM one person at a time, so each response will be individual and private.

Looking at my own schedule, I don't think March will work out either. Way too much going on which I forgot. However, September/October would be better for me at least, and give everyone some time to plan for it.

And once I get a response from everyone, I will come back here with findings and hopefully a group consensus on something. Also I'll be asking goyguy, our regular poster who has had success coordinating these kind of things in the past, exactly what he did and how he did it.

LMAO!!! I think "sentiment" was the word you were looking for.
Consider me asked. DM on its way.

The idea of a face-to-face meeting amongst Forum regulars has intrigued me for some time. When last it was mentioned, it was greeted with skepticism, over fear that fractious disagreements online would spill over into something quite a bit more unpleasant in real life. Even so, personally I remain interested - count me in!

Dang, I'm going to be in Cincinnati at the end of February.

Great idea, though. I'd like to see that museum one of these days.

Goyguy, you are correct. My bad there (yep, can't blame autocorrect on this one... my own stupidity haha)

Anyways, Ohiogirl81, probably this will be pushed back to a Saturday in September/October instead. I didn't check my calendar closely enough before I posted this thread. Expect a DM sometime within the next week or two. I haven't sent any yet, but they will be coming to all of our regular posters. And if anyone else out there wants in on the loop, shoot me a DM!

Actually, I've found meetups to do the opposite of your concern: meeting face to face has actually brought more harmony & respect. But I'll not be at a Cinti meetup as I'm now living in SC & just visit this board to catchup on my old home.

Never say never, I've gotten to five. Sometimes the planets do align.
