Default A long time resident

Reading through this particular base I find it very amusing. I am a long time resident of Cincinnati. I grew up in College Hill and was 1 of 3 white family's that lived on our entire street (Atwood). Problems ... yeah I had a few. We ALL did, no matter what race you were. Now that I'm 60 and reflect back, life was what you made it.
Life back then was different and so were the creeps. Today you have a breed of thugs that have no respect for you or what you represent. Therefore ... I carry a gun for the protection of myself and family. Two as a matter of fact. Both concealed but ready at a moments notice. I don't look for trouble or act like a bad ass wanting any either. With home invasions on the rise and drug deals out in the open you need to protect yourself NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE. Stay out of dark places and never go where you're not sure of your surroundings. I've pulled my gun 3 different times in downtown Cincinnati alone but have yet to fire it. Seems looking down the barrel of a 9mm and having the choice to retreat and live is a good deterrent. Safety is what and where YOU make it.

Well said. I've been thinking about getting one too. I lived in Downtown for almost 3 years, it's not from anything like that. I actually felt safer living in Downtown versus Colerain.

The reason why I want to get one is because of what you said about Home Invasions. They're unpredictable and will happen no matter where you live. If someone comes through that door or window, I will shoot to kill if its my wife or them.

You have to have thick shoulders to brave Cincinnati's interior lifestyle. Even with new developments they're bandaid fixes. Everyone knows the city has some very good things going for it, and there is potential. But oh man, when you get down to the natti-gritty that is a lot of rust and neglect to shake off.

What is Cincinnati doing for our country? Or what is Ohio doing for our country for that matter? Not a whole lot of anything anymore. That's not something to be proud of at the end of the day. Every city in Ohio has a LONG way to go in so many different ways. But I will say if you keep your head up, its not to bad a place. Most of the meaningful things life has to offer can be found in any Ohio city.

Ive rooted for Ohio, prayed for it, defended it, put it out on a limb, prayed some more for it. I wont give up if you guys don't. Florida is my temporary home. I hope to learn a lot while here, and get on solid ground, and one day bring something back to offer Ohio.

But dang if Ohio hasn't been stuck in the same funk for over fifty some years.
Ao you decided to live in a state that only provides old people with a place to die and this is better than ohio how? I think many places in this country are flat and dull, but some people crave that sort of familiarity. I prefer cramped urban spaces where safety is questionable. I like that sort of thing and Cincinnati offers it in small doses. I have had my car broken into and my radio stolen but ah...a small price to pay to not live in a mcmansion in the burbs. However I think we all live where we feel comfortable and most will never understand why someone would live in Florida or Ohio or the whole U.S. for that matter. As for me I'll be off to Portland in a few years and then hopefully Europe and leave the states to those who truly love them.

You are quite right. OTR is absolutely not safe for some persons. Specifically, for those persons who choose to live and visit here because of the drug and prostitution problem.

OTR used to have about 25000, mostly low income residents. Tensions ran high, and neighborhood and domestic problems resulted in crimes and even killings. No more. Almost all of the responsible low income people are gone. Trust me. OK, there are a few HUD subsidized buildings with a few long term residents who have not fled. But people who have a voucher for housing assistance or low income people who pay their own rent are almost all gone. Would you take money you earned from working and give it to a landlord who has an empty building with drug dealers in the halls? I don't think so. That's why there are so many vacant buildings in OTR. The people who don't want to be part of the drug and prostitution thing took off. So the drug and pimp folks have lost most of their customer base.

The bar scene provides fuel to the vermin because they sell the bar patrons pot, solicit them for sex and steal stuff from their cars and occasionally rob them. For now, the bar scene has disappeared. The casino may reignite this problem, we will see.

The population is down to around 6000. Probably a third of these people are yuppies and urban pioneers. The other 4000 are on the corner with a blunt stuffed with weed, or in the alley, or passed out in their vermin hovel or visiting the ill advised support systems for the so-called homeless. When these folks interact with each other, bad things happen. When outsiders come to OTR to buy drugs or service prostitutes, bad things happen. And, as the vermin and the so-called homeless move from one bad area to another, they litter and steal and make themselves generally obnoxious.

I like being in OTR, but I'm only here in the daytime, so I can't claim credit for bravery. Eventually, most of the vermin will be gone. That will leave the so-called homeless who sponge off of stupid but well meaning religious organizations' (mostly Franciscan) missions. These missions enable persons who desperately need medical and mental health assistance from getting that help. Someday, the Franciscans and the Free Store will catch on and realize the harm they cause by enabling alcoholics and drug addicts, but for now they are a big problem.

Someday, this will be a great place because of the beatiful architecture and proximity. But it may be a while.

wilson is old and lives in Mt. lookout. I live a stones throw from OTR. Repeat, I live here.

Actually, I was hanging out in OTR last night. Tons of new condos, restaurants and bars opening up. I think it's easy to say that OTR is on a major upswing. Condos are selling more than anywhere else in the region and putting eyes on the streets is a larger crime preventer than having 50 more cops patrolling ... wouldn't it be amazing if we had a Minority Report system where we could see crime before it happens... we can only dream though, right!

It's mostly West side. Over-The-Rhine, Price Hill, West Wood, Downtown, Northside, so forth... There are great places to live on the West. Like Mt. Adams. If you want nice community settings, definitely go towards East. (Not dis-respecting West!)

Yesterday's murder is a pretty good example of my comment above. Mr. Palmore, Jr., (the victim) and his father have been charged more than 50 times in the last ten years for mostly drug sales and possession and weapons charges in OTR. These folks have mostly lived over on Lafuille but have been repeatedly arrested in OTR. This weekend didn't turn out so well for them.

Being a criminal is about the surest way to become poor and often dead. No disrespect for the deceased Mr. Palmore, but good and decent folks, even when they are poor do not have these problems.
