This is a perfect example of why I have such contempt for Cincinnati's city government. Remember how nobody would listen to the people who suggested it MIGHT NOT be a good idea to give a massive handout of taxpayer money to a deadbeat business? Especially when there were probably a zillion alternatives which could have and would have made money in a location in the Banks? Say what you want about Cranley, if he's able to put the brakes on this kind of taxpayer ripoff stunts he'll have my support.

If I recall properly, there was a great deal of controversy connected to the amount of public money which was granted to this business at the Banks. I know their original location in Hamilton was closed for renovations in 2013. What I can't find is whether they ever reopened.

Sarah ... I agree if Cranley can stop this kind of corruption in the City he will be great. But you know what, my guess is he will be a bigger contributor rather than a detractor.

I believe a new restaurant recently opened at that location.

I believe you are referencing the former Mahoganey's in Hamilton. And that is fine. But subject of this thread is the Mahoganey's at the Banks in downtown Cincinnati which was a subject of a lot of controversy concerning the amount of money the City of Cincinnati gave them to start the business there. If they are now having struggles keeping that business afloat there will be more than a little criticism.

It must be a bad restaurant if they can't make it in The Banks...that's such a great development I don't know how any good place wouldn't make a killing there...every place I go to there always has a great crowd...I never went to Mahogany's though.

Mahogany's happened because Milton Dahoney willed it to happen. There were those in the administration who opposed the Mahogany's deal, and Dahoney put his finger in their face and told them to make it happen. But, he's gone now, off the hook, blameless.

Your typical weekend/ballgame crowd at The Banks doesn't much fall within the market for soul food, however "upscale." If Mahogany's started a line of microbrews that could change.

Although the phrase "PC run amok" is getting old and is usually off base, I think it applies here. The thinking was that with the White Guilt Museum - oops, Freedom Center - in close proximity it would never do to not have an AA-operated business at The Banks. But why a savvy restaurateur or tavern operator couldn't be found...

From what the articles states. It's doing good business. It just could be bad management.

These people already had a track record of not paying their bills, and their existing business wasn't even in Hamilton County. But taxpayers were assured that with an infusion of nearly $1 million of our money, they would be a rousing success. This kind of thing happens over and over, (remember the guy who absconded with the quarter million in cash he got from the bogus, 2-page proposal to rehab a theater? or the "developer" of Glencoe Place who got free roofs on the buildings that have since been demolished?) meaning that decent hardworking people who actually pay their bills are disgusted and want to leave Cincinnati, while the scammers and deadbeats look at the place as a virtual Nirvana.

Yeah, this makes me mad. And for those of you who want to make excuses, all the online reviews say the food is overpriced and mediocre. Nobody in their right mind's going to spend big bucks on mediocre soul food. It's just not a viable business concept.
