I am looking for information about a jewish bakery that hired many immigrants. Members of my mothers family worked there. I don't know the name of the bakery, I found hand written notes of my mothers mentioning melish avenue.

If these good people can't find out for you, I bet nobody can!

Hebrew Union College in Clifton is home to a big archive of Jewish history throughout the world, not only in Cincinnati. So I'm sure they'd be able and happy to research this question.
The only "Jewish bakery" this goy guy knows of is Klosterman's, which is still very much in business and may have originated on Melish Ave. They now operate out of a large facility on Paddock Rd. If you're served good rye bread in a restaurant it's probably from them.
You wouldn't find a trace of any bakery on Melish nowadays. Not only did the Jewish community depart decades ago, the street itself was nearly obliterated when MLK Drive came through to create a new east-west artery across the city.

I agree if you get a decent rye bread today it is probably Klosterman. But what happened to Rubel's? I remember their Heidelberg Rye from when I was a kid. A thick slice of onion and a slice of limburger cheese on rye with some beer to wash it down. My family's favorite snack, along with some pickled pigs feet of course, on Saturday night when playing cards at the old homestead since no one had any money to do anything else. In the middle of winter, when the weather was particularly nasty, they would sometimes play cards through the night. When dawn came they would break out grandma's goetta, fry up a batch, serve it with toasted rye bread, and pass the pepper grinder around. I do remember their favorite card game was 500. Haven't had anyone mention that in years.

If you like dark rye, this bread may not be for you, but stop by a Servatii's and pick up a loaf of what they call "salt rye," a light rye with caraway seeds and coarse ground salt on the crust. I think it's delicious.

All the good bread in town is found at Shadeau Bakery in OTR.

When you sit down at a fine restaurant downtown and reach for the bread it is probably Shadeau. Google it for reviews and see for yourself.

Did she write a number address for the location? I have access to old Cincinnati directories on Ancestry.com and can look it up for you.

Edited to add:
I found a listing in 1939 William's City Directory of The Bake Shop at 420 Melish Ave. Maybe?

By the way, the location of the above mentioned bakery would be close to the McDonald's on MLK Drive.

I used to stop at Cliff's Pharmacy to hang out after school in the late 50's which was about a block down from where the McD's is but don't remember the bakery.
