1950's-1970's Stratford Manor & Eastwood Village (Cincinnati, Norwood: upkeep, places to live)

All of you seem to have great fun reminiscing about the Manor. It think that is just great and can't believe you have kept the thread going this long. I had a sister-in-law who lived in the Manor for a couple of years in what would have been right around 1960 before she and her husband bought a house in Dillonvale. The SIL is about 2 years older than me which puts her about 76. The BIL passed a few years ago, The SIL, her oldest son and oldest daughter, both divorced, recently sold their respectcive houses in the Cincinnati area and bought a home down in the Florida Keys. The son was old enough to retire from the Sharonville police force and the daughter just plain quit working. They pooled the proceeds from their respective houses and bought the Florida Keys property. They are just now realizing what they did, what a huge transformation. The complaint I am getting is it is hotter than blue blazes here, being from Cincinnati we have to run the air conditioner here or we will die. They are in the process of buying a small boat in which they plan on enjoying the water and fishing. I know the son was born at the Manor, I believe the daughter not until they were in Dillonvale. When I think of this older mom and her two oldest kids just picking up and moving to the Keys, my thoughts are dementia must be setting in.

I started in the 4th grade at Eastwood Elem. the very first year it opened. Before that, I went to Oakley by city bus using prepaid bus tokens. We moved suddenly in Spring (April, I think) of 1959 when I was in the 7th grade at Lyons Jr. High which was aalso a fairly new school when I started there.

The diagram is slightly incorrect. Eastwood Drive entered the Manor from Duck Creek Road, and did indeed make a right curve which then bordered the farmer's field. I'm not sure if that stretch was also called Eastwood or not. It terminated at Red Bank Road, but it wasn't Kingsley. Shelbourne began at Strathmore for 2 blocks and ended at the street by the farmer's field. Kingsley was one block north of Strathmore and one block south of 'Eastwood' (the stretch by the farmer's field). Kingsley was for the most part west and east, but it curved north at the eastern section and ended at the same road by the farmer's field.

Judging by your diagram, your apartment was located somewhat across the street from the people I knew who lived on Shelbourne. The apartment buildings they live in was arranged around a U-shaped courtyard. I'm sure I walked or biked past your place many times.

LOL! I suspected you were kidding about the great-grandmother thing, but still there are plenty of websites that do indeed require personal information, posed as a choice of questions to confirm your ID in case you forget your password or something like that. I've seen choices other member websites that ask questions like "What is your mother's maiden name", "What is your dog's name", "What your favorite city", etc. They're suppose to be answers to questions that only you would know. I'm not sure but it's certainly possible they use such personal info to compile demographics. The other hassle, at least in the past, is that social networks like Facebook, etc., have been known to be a haven for scammers posing as "friends" but are mining for personal info that's been posted on FB pages, or try to communicate with members by personal messages or requests for email addresses which can then end up getting your inbox loaded with scams, porn, viruses, and misc. unwanted garbage. I suppose there's generally very little risk for any given individual on FB, but things like that can and do sometimes happen. i don't know, maybe I'm just being overly cautious. The same argument can be made about forums as well. It helps to read the Terms of Service information to better find out how they use the information you supply.

Back to the Stratford Manor discussion,a link was posted quite a number of pages back to a website that actually has historical aerial maps (views) of Stratford Manor dating back to 1956 (I think) that show details of individual building, the streets and alleys, sidewalks, the neighborhood shopping center, the woods, the farmer's field and pond, the houses on Mansion Hill, etc. It's really cool. Access to view them requires having "Microsoft Silverlight" installed on your computer. You might need to reboot your computer after installing it. Siverlight is essentially a free Flash program that's never really become as popular as others. But to see what the Manor was like way back when, it's worth it. The views can be scrolled and you can zoom in or zoom out.

The link below can get you to it. I enter "Stratford Manor Cincinnati Ohio" then click on "1956" under "Aerials". It's pretty amazing. The only thing it doesn't show are the street names. I think I posted a few resized screen grabs of the old neighborhood in this thread just to point out a few of the historical features, like the school, the shopping center, etc.

Yeah, this thread really has stretched out - almost 1300 posts - far longer than almost anyone would've expected.

You're right about the summer heat. Back in the '50s, I can't think of anyone who had any air conditioners, at least not in the Manor. I'm not sure we even had a fan in our apartment. During warm summer nights, we'd open the windows (they were screened) to cool off. Once in a while, the kids around where we lived would sometimes bring out flashlights and blankets and scrounge around the trash area for large cardboard boxes to build 'tents' to camp out by the fenced playground at night, with parents' permission of course. The usual arrangement was boys over here and girls over there. But after dark we'd sneak into each other's 'tents' just to stay up late telling ghost stories or play spin the bottle or just chat, taking care not to be too noisy which could alert the parents that late-night shenanigans were going on instead of sleeping. But we'd all eventually go back to our respective makeshift 'tents' and drift off to sleep. It was a lot of fun.

There was a pool nearby. I vaguely recall this. I do remember being scared of the 50's car grillls in the parking area because of their massice front bumpers. i have pictures of my before and after first haircut by Dave Hoefer in 1957 My mom saved and wrote on photos which I have. The pics I have of the building I lived in has what looks like 6 wood slats as a front trim. I do not recall much more.
