Actually I think it was 1968 for the last big one and probably some minor skirmishes a few years back.

There were also riots in Avondale in the summer of 1967. I know this because I rode my motorcycle up Reading Road behind a National Guard jeep.

MLK's assassination didn't seem to spark any riots in Kenwood or Bridgetown.

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore--
And then run?
Does it stink like rotten meat?
Or crust and sugar over--
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags
like a heavy load.

Or does it explode?
-Langston Hughes 1951

i grew up in bond hill and avondale, among others. i don't have much good to say about avondale, but as some posters may know, i mention paddock hills a lot. it's in between avondale and bond hill, but it's nice, quiet and very diverse.

Bottom line-- Avondale is among the worst neighborhoods in the city for violent crime. I think it had more murders than any neighborhood in the city last year and the 2nd most robberies. It generally ranks near the bottom in all the violent crime categories.

North Avondale isn't nearly as bad crime-wise.

It's too bad because there are a lot of big houses/mansions in Avondale. It definitely has potential, but unless the crime drops, I don't see it reaching it's potential.

Avondale doesn't have a lot to offer an energetic young couple. If you insist anyway, try the area arount Xavier University.

Other than that, too much crime, no neighborhood stores or theaters.

Drop into the Avondale Pride center sometime or find out about the Avondale youth council, there are people getting involved. And a lot of money is being put into that neighborhood to bring it back to life. Doesnt mean you should give up on an entire neighorhood because it is fallen on hard times. There are some beautiful areas and homes in Avondale and without people to live in them, they will be just another empty house in a neighborhood that has given up on their history and archit. beauty. What a shame. What the community needs is more people who care and want to see the neighborhood change.

Wow, the assassination of the most prominent black figure in the country didn't trigger civil unrest in 99% percent white neighborhoods? shocking.

The implicit racism of the suburbs is what is holding this city back from greatness.
