Also, I hate the term "the city" because it sounds like it's the only city that matters.
And that's pretty much the fact in the tri-state area: no other city can match with New York and Manhattan.
That's alos the case in all other big cities, I bet folks in Bay Area call SF the city as much as we call Manhattan.
By the way, this is what the title Sex In The City means. Sex in New York or Manhattan to be more precise.

I would agree, even in Philly many times when people say the "city", they are referring to Manahttan, and most definately true among NYers
In Philly, this is probably something only limited to specific social circles. For a large part of life, I have traveled back & forth to NY visiting relatives--but have never referred to NY as "the city." And no one that I know in Philly has ever referred to NY as "the city." If I would have ever said to someone in Philly that I was going to "the city," they would have probably asked--"what city?"
I, and everyone I know in Philly (in my social circles), always just said we were "going to New York"--regardless of the borough. And if the person who we said it to was really familiar with NY and wanted to know more, then we would specify the particular borough we were going to.
