I think Austin holds its own in skyline, liveability, education, location and economy, but pretty much pale in comparison to these two on anything remotely cultural.

Not bad to be a sports fan in Austin either, unless you're a fan of somebody other than the Longhorns . I really like Nashville, and I've been there several times. Good shopping, decent sports (Triple-A baseball, Titans, Predators), Music Row. Overall I feel like New Orleans wins, if for nothing else than it's size, it seems like it has a little more to offer. The French Quarter is an obvious one, as are the Saints and the Hornets. There is also Triple-A baseball in town, shopping, the lake, etc.

Architecture: Importance - Austin, Physical Buildings - New Orleans
Culture: New Orleans
Education: Austin
Economy: Not sure Nashville has 3 Fortune 500's, Austin has 1. Both are capitals but I imagine Texas has a much larger budget than Nashville. For now I'll say tie until someone shows me a list saying otherwise.
Food: New Orleans
Healthcare: Not a clue
Liveability: I'd rather live in New Orleans
Location: I'd rather be located in New Orleans..
Music: I'm a jazz man not a rock man so definitely New Orleans
National importance : Austin is the Capital of a much larger state so its gotta be the winner of this.
Nightlife: Kinda depends on what you dig, as I said I like Jazz so New Orleans
Regional importance: Obviously New Orleans is the only major metro in its area
Skyline: They're all pretty sad.. I guess Austin.
Transportation: Nashville
Overall: New Orleans for me.

Architecture Austin has the better skyline, but New Orleans has the better architecture.
Culture New Orleans, that Cajun/Voodoo/Blues/Whathaveyou culture is pretty legit.
Education Austin has the flagship campus of the UT system.
Economy Austin has been consistently ranked as a city with (relatively) great job prospects.
Food New Orleans is internationally known for its gumbo, but Austin's Tex-Mex/BBQ ain't bad either.
Healthcare I honestly have no clue.
Livability Well, I know that New Orleans got hit by a hurricane...
Location They're all located on bodies of water, which is a must for me, and while I'd like for a city to be located near the ocean, I'm not too fond of hurricanes and floods either.
Music I personally prefer Austin's "cosmic cowboy" brand of rock, but all three cities are well known for their musical contributions. Austin is the self-proclaimed "Live Music Capital of the World"; Nashville is a huge player in country and country pop music today; New Orleans of course is one of the cities that incubated the Blues and Jazz music; so on an objective level, probably New Orleans.
National importance Hmmm, don't know really...
Nightlife 6th Street in Austin can be quite legit on a weekend night, but I'd venture to guess that New Orleans is no push-over for a good time either, what with MARDI GRAS and all.
Regional importance Again I'm not too sure, although Austin is the bigger city of the three, and the capital of a larger and arguably more productive state than the other two.
Shopping Haven't spent much time in the other two cities, so I don't know; Austin's okay though.
Skyline Austin, no contest.
Sports Probably New Orleans and/or Nashville. Austin is huge on college sports, but not really any professional sports to speak of.
Transportation Again, haven't spent enough time in either of the other two cities to make a decision, but Austin's public transit, compared to its size, is in all honesty kind of pitiful. We just now put in our first commuter rail line, and our bus system is so-so. We don't have subways or light rail or anything like that yet.
Overall Overall, I personally would pick Austin in a heartbeat, but I'm also kind of biased. But even so, knowing what I know about the other cities, I'd love to visit New Orleans; Nashville never really did anything for me one way or the other, no offense to anyone from there.
