Can you name some city areas (MSA/CSA) that have a larger population than the state of the principle city?

I think for CSA Boston & New York City come to mind.
For MSA, I can't think of any, but New York City is close, only 500,000 or so off from New York State.

I actually find this very interesting, to say the least.

Can you think of any others? If not, can you think of any others that might be that way in the future? And can you see this being an advantage or disadvantage to the respective states?

The NYC MSA comes close, but it has 500,000 less people than the State of New York. The CSA however has a little over 2 million more.

Boston MSA is also smaller than the population of Massachusetts, but the CSA is larger.

The only one that comes to mind is DC....but it's not technically a state.

For the future I was thinking Chicagoland as well if they ever add Chicago-Milwaukee CSA, but that's very distant in the future, and will need more commuters to make it happen.

It's interesting to say the least.

I just checked MSA, Providence MSA is larger than Rhode Island's population.

Very interesting.

Wow. These are going to be hard to find because in order to meet that criteria the Metro would have to have the unique situation of spilling over into neighboring States.
