Memphis for music, but New Orleans isn't far behind.
New Orleans for entertainment, but Memphis isn't bad in this department

Overall, Memphis is a better place to live, New Orleans is a better place to visit.

Beale St cannot compare to Bourbon St. The Quarter, Marigny, CBD, and Warehouse district all combine to make one huge entertainment area even though most people only hear about the Quarter. Memphis' entertainment area pales in comparison.

For music it depends on what you like. If you like brass band, NOLA jazz, bounce, salsa, etc. then New Orleans is for you. If you like blues, crunk, gospel, soul, etc. then Memphis is for.

Memphis is a better place to live? How?

Um, you're slightly less likely to get murdered. To me that makes it a better place to live. Also, Memphis' population is stable

That's a really ignorant comment. The average citizen or tourist has little to no chance to be murdered to begin with and it's probably the same in Memphis. Now if there was any truth to that you'd have to consider the fact that Memphis is a strip of "good" areas surrounded by "bad" areas.

You're exactly right, but to me the higher crime rate makes New Orleans a less desirable place to live.

I think most people would pick New Orleans because it is one of the most unusually unique American cities that people worldwide know of. New Orleans is so much more famous than most American cities.

A lot depends on what kind of music you like.

Whereas I love the traditional jazz and dixieland of New Orleans, I hardly even consider "Blues" music. So my answer would definitely be New Orleans. However, I get the feeling that....oh....a B.B. King fan would answer this question differently.
