My husband, 14-month old daughter and I currently live in Boston (Somerville, MA to be exact, for those who know the area). We own our condo and have for the past 7 years. We REALLY love our neighborhood, but we find ourselves in a unique position, in that my husband and I are both considering making transitions in our careers at the same time. While we love this area, it is very expensive to live here, and we both enjoy trying new things, so we are now realizing that we could go anywhere at this point and start a new chapter/adventure in our lives.
We are a bit overwhelmed with all of the choices out there, so I will give you a list of our criteria, and if you could tell me the best cities that will most likely match with our desires, I would really appreciate it!
Here is the list:
*It needs to be vibrant - a sense of energy to the city will be great
*Cultural diversity and tolerance of different cultures and lifestyles are important - if you would describe the city as "progressive" it may be a good fit for us
*We are certainly more "urban" than suburban or rural - but I think that a really great college town would be the best fit
*We prefer historic homes to cookie cutter developments
*We would love to have a single-family home with a small backyard - and not have to pay an arm-and-a-leg for it
*A really easily walkable downtown area that is beautiful, with parks, shops, restaurants, and maybe college(s) is the type of neighborhood that would fit us the best
*Some semblance of a public transportation system would be awesome!
*Lots of cultural attractions and things to do
*My husband is originally from the upper midwest, and so, unlike many from the east coast, we are intrigued by the idea of a midwestern city
We just are not sure which cities, or which neighborhoods we should be considering.

You'll get everything in your list of criteria with Chicago, Illinois. And I mean everything.
I agree, Chicago and Twin Cities
