The guy i was responding to claimed that there were suburbs within nyc. I cant vouch for areas outside of the city limits

No one did that. You misread what he really meant. What he said was that in pretty much every metro area, the majority of people live in the suburbs. Even in the NYC metro, the majority (55 percent) live in places other than NYC itself.

He said nyc has suburbs. Nyc does not have suburbs maybe the areas outside new york has suburbs. But not within the five boroughs of new york city
