Most Rail lines in the Northeast carry 10,000 + daily , and the main NEC / Feeder lines handle 600,000+ Daily that will rise to 1.6 million making it one of the busiest Railways in the World. By 2035 almost every NE city will have at least one rail lines running to or through it.

I highly doubt many people commute 2 hours or more each way that is just too far away. and the ones that do that they got no life but work.

They've been talking reactavating the lines for years it's probably not going to happen.

Well look around Scranton and Lehigh Valley alot of ppl do it. As much as 80,000 in Eastern PA. Thats why NJ and PA are working together to restore 3 Rail lines.

well for scranton thats around 2.5 hrs to NYC or urban jersey which is too far for most to commute from, yeah sure a few people may do it but not many.

and for the Lehigh valley I'm sure most of them commute to Baltimore and Phily, that area is also for the most part too far to commute to NYC.

Did you check the link to the map to see where the U.S. is really growing?

How about you go on the PA forum and ask how many ppl commute into Jersey / NYC. Baltimore is farther then NYC.

The Lehigh Valley is less than hour commute to the 287 corrider in NJ - these counties may be gobbled up by the NYC CSA in the next Census (2010) They are also about 50 miles to Philly, less to the Western and Norhtern burbs (Note The Lehigh Valley is directly adjacent to the Philly and NYC MSAs meaning the counties border one another already and is already a population of nearly a million and has grown by 11% since 2000 and continues to grow)

You are describing Lancaster - this is almost equidisant to Philly/Baltimore and DC

Below is the Urabn Area for the Lehigh Valley (It already extends into the Philly MSA (Bucks County to the bottom and NYC Warren County to the right)

Here is Lancaster (To the east and NE Berks and Chester are part of the Philly MSA to the West and NW are York and Harrisburg and to the South is Baltimore)

Note none of these areas were included in the 45 Million, added there is approximately another 5 Million in directely adjacent MSAs to the NE corrider (all less 25-30 miles)

Allentown alone is 1.45 hrs to nyc I don't think NYC is going to gobble them up.

I'm Sure the Lehigh was added to the corridor 45 million.

Before this debate goes on, if the original poster is online. Then what states are meant in the "Northeast" corridor from your original post.

Some of them include WV, MD, DC, VA, DE and some of them don't. So what states exactly is meant by this?

No it wasn't (I did the math, I am the OP)

It is 35 minutes to Somerville NJ - if you know anything about the NE - that is one of the larest job markets in the NY MSA. Trust me I am in and out of the area at least twice a week!!!!!!!!

The OP stated he only counted the "CSA population of the core cities", and I already posted some stats on the Northeast. One of em was:

BosWash
Est. Population as of 2000-50,000,000
Projected Population for 2025-58,000,000

And the count up for the region as a whole if anyone missed it. (Bottom of the page)
