I have lived in Columbia, MO and have visited Tucson, AZ many times and am considering relocating there in about a year.
I know a lot more about Columbia than Tucson so feel free to correct me.

Both are college towns...one in the midwest and the other in America's sunny southwest corner.

Thought we could discuss some categories and determine who would win out:

- College: Both are similar public state schools
- Economy: Columbia seems a lot more stable but Tucson seems to be on the
forefront of solar initiatives
- Housing: someone with more expertise can discuss this one?
- Schools: I know Columbia has some great public schools!
- Weather: Columbia has hot summers and cold winters. Tucson has long hot
summers and mild winters.
- Nature: Columbia has more parks/trails (katy trail) but in Tucson you have to drive out to Mt. Lemmon area.
- Nightlife: Both are college towns and have a decent scene if necessary
- Shopping: someone else fill me in on this one? I know Columbia has everything necessary and I assume Tucson does also
- Driving distance to other cities/areas: More access from Tucson to vegas, san diego, phoenix, and mexico. From Columbia one can go to Chicago, STL, Kansas City.

I had a good time in Columbia. It was a small town and perhaps one would run into the same people, but I am going to assume that Tucson is somewhat similar in that regard.

Any other thoughts or ideas?

Easiest choice ever for me.

Tucson, Arizona.

My favorite city in the country. Good driving distance through scenic Southern California (I have done that before). City has all the basic amenities needed, and has good hiking areas. Only an hour and 20 minutes away from Phoenix.

University of Arizona has a nice campus and the college town area over there is actually very nice. Lively on weekends and you'll get good food there, and grocery and whatever else needed. Near the college area you'll get adequate nightlife, you'll find some good bars around.

Shopping, that's accessible in any city, and Tucson has that as well. If you want to take it to top shopping scene then Phoenix is only a bit over an hour away. But you can find what you need in Tucson.

Honestly this is no comparison, IMHO- Tucson does not lack natural setting or anything else needed. Housing is fairly moderate, you can get a good place for a reasonable amount. And Tucson's summers are not that bad, the temperature might be high, but it's just annoying if you spend like 4 hours outdoors or more. Otherwise the mild winter and do able summer, yeah Tucson wins.

I would pick Columbia, MO; only because I have zero interest in moving somewhere west of Missouri. All the other stuff is subjective; and Arizona does not appeal to my subjective whims.
