No people forget the Galleria area is a shopping district; it's surrounded by tons of stores ranging from average to upscale.

Not really. there is upscale shopping in Hughland village.

Such as Cole Haan, Michael Kemper, Tootsies, Jannie and Jack, Ann Taylor, Donald J Piner, etc

You can also find upscale shopping outside the galleria in Uptown park, and some in the River Oaks Shopping Center

Half of those aren't even luxury/upscale. I was just putting examples of upscale stores in. Not all of them. You have to konw that Atlanta has more than 10 luxury stores.

Atlanta has:
7 for all Mankind
BCBG MAXAZRIA
Betsey Johnson
BLOOMINGDALE'S (2 Locations) (Houston=0)
Burberry
Cartier
David Yurman
Diesel
Ermengildo Zegaa
Facconable
Fendi
Herve Leger
Karen Millen
Kate Spade
Kenneth Cole
Kiehl's
Lacoste (2 Locations)
Louis Vuitton
Michael Kors (2 Locations)
Miss Sixty
Neiman Marcus
Nicole Miller
Ralph Lauren
Salvatore Ferragamo
St. John
Stuart Weitzman (2 locations)
True Religion
Anne Fontaine
Bally
Barney's New York (Co-Op)
Hugo Boss
Cole Haan
Elie Tahari
Giorgio Armani
Gucci (Open since 1969)
Intermix
Jeffrey
Jimmy Choo
Juicy Couture
MaxMara
Nordstrom (3 Locations)
Saks Fifth Avenue
Theory
Tiffany & Co
Tommy Bahama
Tory Burch
Valentino
Versace
Wolford
Hermes
That's 51 for Atlanta.
You listed 74 and no one can be fooled with that list unless you don't know a thing about luxury brands (The Limited, A'GACI, Chico's? Really?, Definitely more than "a few" regular brands that you listed)
Atlanta should be getting Loro Piana, Oscar de la Renta, Bottega Veneta, etc.

for the record, i just want to point out that i do admit that while both cities are pretty much comparable, atlanta does have the edge in my opinion. dallas and miami are definitely ahead of both, though

I agree, but people forget Houston is known and recognized for it's local boutiques. Also, Atlanta passing up Houston in upscale fashion is a very recent phenomenon.

I don't know why people are making it sound like Atlanta is New York or something when it comes to fashion and shopping.

Once a year, my cousins in Dallas (University Park), Houston (River Oaks) and I get together for a visit. We rotate cities every year, and much of the trip involves shopping. As an Atlantan, I am thrilled at what I encounter in both Dallas and Houston's retail scenes; on the other hand, my cousins always comment on the fact that they find things here that they never see in TX.
I think at the end of the day it's pretty much a draw between the three cities. I do wish that Atlanta had something along the lines of Highland Park Village in Dallas, but in future the Streets of Buckhead is supposed to fulfill that role.

I understand and I'm not denying that Atlanta has better shopping than Houston. However, my point is that people are acting like Houston is some backwards town that offers no type of upscale or sophisticated shopping.

You'd think we were talking about some small country town the way people are describing Houston.

I would say Houston and Atlanta are comparable. However i'd say Houstons retail scene is more matured and offers a bigger mix and a larger selection of high end designers. Atlanta has definitely started to catch up in the last 5 years. Fashion powerhouses like Dior, YSL & Chanel among some others give Houston the edge over Atlanta.
