Maybe, we drove between the 2 one night, we reached Trenton then we were on US-1, it was just like a wide suburban street with red lights, stores (a ton of car dealerships) & houses. I was wondering when we where gonna reach the highway then like 60 minutes later there's signs for the bridge. The suburbs don't end, never saw anything like that in my life.
I see it as one big CSA but separate MSA's (is that how it works?), I don't know which is which.
For one they won't ever meet the current CSA threshold from core to core.
Secondly, it would be a real shame to happen. Philly and NYC should (and deserve) to be separate metros.
Besides, any combined NYC/Philly interaction should be continued to be viewed in the larger context of the BosWash Megalopolis. The same factors apply to Boston, Baltimore and DC.

They will always be seperate MSA regardless, to be joined that way all counties would have to maintain 25% commuter rates to NYC, the core, again please read the criteria

This I agree, the turnpike actually bypasses the developed area but route 1 from Chester county PA to Ct is all continuously developed

It will be even faster if and when they get the missing ramps from the PA turnpike to 95 put in place...that way you can take exit 6 instead of 4 and its all highway no stopping to anywhere in Philly....I would be able to do NYC to Philly in 1:15 mins barring no traffic at the Lincoln Tunnel......at night I do 90 down the entire NJT

True. The Acela trains are capable of going even faster than 150, but the FRA limits the operating speed. Between Philly and NYC Acela maxes out at 135 through parts of NJ. It slows down on the approaches to each city because of train congestion and old infrastructure that prohibits fast speeds.
As for the two CSAs merging/combining. Eh, it's possible.
