Which city do you think has the most famous landmarks? Landmarks that would be noticeable/identifiable to people across the country (or world).

Compare city and metro.

L.A. area has: Hollywood Sign, Walt Disney Concert Hall, Griffith Park Observatory, Grauman's Chinese Theater, Hollywood Walk of Fame, U.S. bank tower (maybe), Getty Museum (maybe), Disneyland, Santa Monica Pier, various famous houses/hotels

Chicago area has: Sears Tower, John Hancock Center (maybe), Cloud Gate, Navy Pier, various famous houses, what else?

I'm not that familiar with Chicago so someone please add to the list.

It looks like maybe Chicago for city proper and L.A. for metro? What do you think? Be sure to add ones I have forgotten.

Chicago:
Frank Lloyd Wright's House
Robbie House
Buildings by Louis Sullivan
Willis (Sears) Tower
Chicago Mercantile Exchange
Art Institute of Chicago
Farnsworth House
Lakeshore Drive Apartments
Illinois Institute of Technology (National Historic Landmark for its Architecture)
University of Chicago
Chase Auditorium (Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me)

But for real global recognition:
Hollywood Sign vs Sears Tower
Hollywood takes it only because even the dumbest of people can determine the sign for Hollywood is in fact in Hollywood. Not everyone can determine that the tall building they're looking at is the Sears Tower.

Lol - wouldn't each metro have more landmarks than their respective city? Kind of a weird voting platform, but LA wins this one simply because of the local film industry and landmarks such as the giant Hollywood sign.

LA, by far.

Hollywood sign, anyone? Disneyland?

Which Chicago landmark is identifiable in Nairobi, Caracas, or Brisbane? None

No one knows the Sears Tower outside of the U.S. If you asked someone in Mexico or even Canada, they wouldn't know. Call it the Willis Tower, and even 95% of the U.S. would have no clue.

In contrast, virtually the entire planet (excepting some Native tribes and the like) knows the Hollywood sign and Disneyland.

And yes, Disneyland is kinda far from LA, but it's still in the same general region.

Disagree. I think the best outcome LA could hope for would be a wash.

To the laymen. Most people in US will be aware of these. Can't speak for international recognition.

LA (taking from initial poster):
Hollywood Sign,
Walt Disney Concert Hall,
Griffith Park Observatory,
Grauman's Chinese Theater,
Hollywood Walk of Fame,
U.S. bank tower (maybe),
Getty Museum (maybe),
Disneyland
Santa Monica Pier (have never really heard of this). How about the spot where Fonzi jumped the shark?

+

Rodeo Drive
Ocean
Venicia Beach (or whatever it's called)
Sunset Strip
The round Capital Records building on Wilshire (?) (doubtful)
LaBrea Tarpits (doubtful)
Rose Bowl
Maybe you could include "stars houses" as a catch-all or OJ's house alone
Playboy mansion (doubtful)

Chicago (a good start by from EndersDrift):
Frank Lloyd Wright's House (maybe)
Robbie House (maybe)
Willis (Sears) Tower
Chicago Mercantile Exchange (doubtful)
Art Institute of Chicago
University of Chicago (maybe)

+

Millenium Park (CloudGate and Gehry Bandshell)
John Hancock Center
Picasso Sculpture
the el
Chicago River with bridges
Wrigley Field
Field Museum
Museum of Science & Industry
Buckingham Fountain
Navy Pier
Adler Plantarium (maybe)
Michigan Avenue
Soldier Field (maybe)
Oak St. Beach (maybe)
Lake Michigan
CSO (Symphony Center) (doubtful)

Farnsworth House (no)
Lakeshore Drive Apartments (no)
Illinois Institute of Technology (National Historic Landmark for its Architecture) (no)
Chase Auditorium (Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me) (no)
Buildings by Louis Sullivan (too general)

dementor-- are you Ohio248 now? Good schtick.

LA Easy, the Hollywood sign just kills it and has too much weight. If you asked somebody what the Sears Tower was elsewhere they'd probably think it was New York or Toronto or whatever big skyscraper city they associated with most in their head. I think Santa Monica/Venice Beach area also has more recognition than anything in Chicago also, as does the Hollywood Star Walk. So there is a triple whammy, with one major before I can even begin discussing anything in Chicago.
I don't agree with Disneyland though, it could easily swap places with Orlando DisneyWorld.

Yeah, this is a brilliant list.

Everyone, but everyone, knows Robbie House, "Venicia Beach" and the globally renowned U.S. Bank Tower.

And, yeah, Oak Street Beach, Griffith Observatory, and Adler Planetarium are definitely hot topics of discussion in Kabul and Lima...
