wow, I was always under the impression that Gary had a larger black population
Gary(the city itself) is black as Detroit. The demographics I posted reflects Northwest Indiana division, which is pretty much majority white outside of Gary, East Chicago, and Hammond.

Gary has less than 100,000 people and is very black.
The Indiana suburbs of Chicago though have around 700,000 people. They are very white, which gives you the overall 18%.
I was actually surprised when I looked that up....I always forget there are so many people living in the Indiana suburbs. They really get glossed over by the media.
The 3 counties that surround the county where Gary is located have over 200,000, and are litereally about 0.3% black.
Hispanic is not a race according to the Census. One can be hispanic of any race.
In Miami, for instance, one would find that a very large number of people are both White and Hispanic. There are also many who are Black, Native or mixed races and also Hispanic. Though, in Miami, almost nobody uses the term Hispanic. The preferred term is Latin.
