I chose Puerto Rico because I have been there several times and it is very beautiful but most people would likely pick Hawaii [a place I hope to visit some day]. Puerto Rico is kind of poor compared to most states and the roads are rough and crime is fairly high [lots of unemployment]. But the countryside is really beautiful with palm-lined beaches, high mountains and jungles. It is fairly cheap to eat and stay in Puerto Rico. Hawaii is probably more spectacular than PR with higher mountains but the beaches on both islands are gorgeous. Puerto Rico and Hawaii are both tropical regions but I have heard that PR is more humid and more likely to experience hurricanes than Hawaii. Also Hawaii is expensive though a flight from California to Hawaii is less than from California to Puerto Rico since it is closer to California.
I would have to pick Hawaii because (to me) it doesn't feel as humid as Puerto Rico. The crime would be higher in Puerto Rico also. I like the architecure of some of the older buildings in Puerto Rico, but people do NOT know how to drive there. I still like visiting both places, but if I had to choose one to live in, it would be Hawaii.
Hawaii would be the better place to live because of the lower unemployment, better infrastructure, better schools, safety, etc. As places to visit, I think they are both equally great. Both San Juan and Honolulu are very vibrant and beautiful cities. Both Hawaii and Puerto Rico have stunning beaches, beautiful mountains, and lots of great resorts/hotels, restaurants, unique culture, and friendly people.
