It's nice to see a much more civilized discussion rather than all the DFW, SF, Philly, Toronto, NYC, Chicago, DC people having pee pee measuring contests.

Doesn't SD have one of if not the best zoos in the country? I would give the edge to Minneapolis personally but SD is no slouch and I really like that city. I feel that MInneapolis would be a better place to raise a family. I don't like deserts that much but SD sure is beautiful. As for schools, UCSD is very good but I bet Minneapolis has a better K12 system and their universities and smaller colleges are also pretty good. Minneapois is a little out there while SD is close to LA and Mexico. I think it's proximity to LA helps a lot despite SD being a great city on its own. Again, my personal preference would be Minneaplois.

I agree the lakes are a great amenity, but yes in San Diego unless it's raining hard you will find people at the beaches enjoying them.

Ive spent a lot of time in SoCal in the winter, and even when it's 85 degrees you don't see anyone in the water outside some surfers in drysuits.

Yeah, I think we get that CowsAndBeer is not at all shy about injecting negative hyperbole concerning anything San Diego.

I swim with just my jammers up until November most years, just me and the dolphins, seals and leopard sharks apparently- though I see some funny looking hairless and pale seals with swimming caps on.

This is true, the water is in the upper 50's most of winter. It gets warm enough to enjoy the beach but the water is still too cold w/o a wetsuit in winter. Only Hawaii and South Florida are swimable in winter.

I know, why are the fools above me giggling like they know something we don't?

Lots of Indian reservation land in the back-country/mountains of SD County.

That water is VERY cold....even in August! I swam in it myself and thankfully when I was younger and didn't care as much. Today I probably couldn't get in the water if it was below 75 degrees! I don't think that's a huge knock against the ocean though.

SD Zoo is great, yes, but so is the Mall of America....and I don't really enjoy either! I would make a trip to the Mall easily 10-20 times before I'd go to the zoo though (any zoo). I think they are comparable amenities, to say the least!
