QOL, activities, and scenery will largely be subjective, but I much prefer Charlotte.

I'd rather live in Albuquerque as I prefer the West, the climate, the culture, and I find the scenery a lot more interesting. But Charlotte hammers out ABQ in almost every urban and suburban category with much a better infrastructure and superior built environment in place. I do find ABQ to be a bit more eclectic and having a more standout of a cultural edge and identity. Charlotte feels very mainstream, like anywhere America. It doesn't really carry any unique cache the way old South cities like Charleston and Savannah do.

Not on the same level at all. Albuquerque might be a better comparison to Greenville-Spartanburg. Charlotte vs Phoenix would also be a good comparison.

I agree with this mostly. Charlotte is bigger and will have more going on, but that said there is a lot more quirk in ABQ. ABQ has IMO significantly better weather and WAY better scenery, with the attendant outdoor recreational opportunities and a much more interesting regional cuisine. Charlotte is one of the most generic sunbelt cities in the U.S.: perfectly fine, but kinda bland, corporate and meh. If you like Charlotte, you probably won't like ABQ and vice-versa. I would rather hike the Sandia mountains than hang out in a mall. YMMV.

Asheville is a popular quirky destination near Charlotte, much like Santa Fe is to Albuquerque.

As for Charlotte, I can agree that its generic, but in my opinion it is "nice" generic and offers a great quality of life. Charlotte is a great place to live in, but I wouldn't recommend anybody visit it as a tourist because it isn't that kind of city. What it is really lacking is history and authenticity, but you can find plenty of that within a short drive.
