Newark (Newark-Union metro) and JC (Hudson county)

The borders are already there and they both have many densely shared suburbs

lol, Dallas is not that hard core itself, the burbs in the metro are more so, but anyway I was thinking along the same lines as you.

Another interesting lineup here ... It's worthy to point out that Cleveland and Akron are already thought of as one "very large metropolitan area" ... only separated by just under 50 miles, but already well connected to each other via suburban sprawl and shared bedroom communities.

Cleveland tourism officials already tout this region as "CLE+" in their travel literature and on the website ... and this more
encompassing region actually includes Youngstown, Akron & Canton.

Now, I have always recognized Cleveland as definitely having the signature hallmarks of being a more "worldly" or a more profoundly recognized metropolis than any other major city in Ohio, including Columbus ... but, don't be so quick to dismiss the power and the vital importance of Columbus ... it's definitely a city with a very bright future ahead

The only one that makes any sense to me right now is NYC-Philadelphia because the two metros already blend together in Mercer County ,NJ
