Haven't read this thread but I don't know if I agree with its basic premise. Using NJ as an example, it's "dominated" by the influence of the cities of Philadelphia and NYC, not the states of Pennsylvania and New York. Same thing applies for most of the other examples in the OP. City influence > state influence in modern society.

California was the first state to take on environmental issues; the Pacific Northwest followed. Much of what makes Portland and Seattle liberal is the influence of San Francisco\ Berkeley on the Northwest. Before the housing bubble burst; the outflow of wealthy Californians into Oregon and Washington was significant and a reason why housing went skylight in those two states. There was resentment of California immigrants but it stimulated the economy of both states.

California casts a giant shadow that includes the entire West Coast.
Fair assessment. I could see that to a point.

i don't think anyone hates mormons. they're pretty harmless.

The once Republican Western U.S. is not strongly influenced by the Democratic party due to the immigration of Californians into other states. Washington may not actually share a mutual border with California but the influence of California on Washington is significant. Many Californians have moved to metro Seattle for example and infused money and mindset into Washington. The state of Washington has relatively insignificant influence in the West compared to California whose overpowering presence dominates the entire nation but especially the Western U.S.
Washington state has long had it's own politcal identity as left leaning:

“There are forty-seven states in the Union, and the Soviet of Washington,” Postmaster General James Farley joked in 1936.

The Seattle General Strike of February 1919 was the first city-wide labor action in America to be proclaimed a “general strike.” It led off a tumultuous era of post-World War I labor conflict that saw massive strikes shut down the nation's steel, coal, and meatpacking industries and threaten civil unrest in a dozen cities.

But yeah, there are many ex-californians here in WA state. Unfair or not, They are blamed for many of the woes like real estate prices, crime, etc.

(It's funny how some California transplants think Washington would be a backwater without their presence)

East Texas is dominant over North La, SC/SW La is dominant over SE Texas. South and SE La is dominant and holds its own, maybe reaching into the MS coast line.

When you say SE Texas, do you just mean the Golden Triangle or are you including Houston because if you are, I'm going to disagree that the culture is dominant.

In terms of what culture? That's irrelevant, culture is around everywhere and its different everywhere.

Truth is, Louisiana & Oklahoma are the two biggest states that bank and benefit off of Texas. Louisiana adds $4.3 Billion to its yearly revenue because of the gaming industry via Texans going there in droves. When they legalize gambling in Texas, which is very close and most Texans approve of it, and will vote to legalize it soon, Louisiana will be the first state to feel a crunch.

Oklahoma has always had to either go with Texas's best interests or give up to Texas. Tulsa lost out to Houston, twice when in comes to the energy industry, they always have to conduct all their business in the oil field which compromises the bulk of their economy in Texas in Houston.

Anyone remember Sam Walton? The Arkansas man who if alive today would be the de facto richest man on Earth for visioning Wal-Mart? 2 of his kids live in Dallas, because that's the largest hub city in the area to do business and leisure. New Mexico? After shutting down various airports along borderland and signing up to get energy and water supplies from Texas, they need Texas more than ever. Las Cruces which is New Mexico's 2nd fastest booming metro after Albuquerque is a suburb of El Paso and will be added into the El Paso metro area in the near future.

Texas doesn't take "parts" and pieces of any states it surrounds, if Texans wanted to stop doing business, stop letting benefits and contracts into this state, and stop going to your states for tourism because they're so close, you're all in a world of hurt economically, you will be drained. Louisiana has had a lot of online news articles in the last year or two showing massive concern of Texas legalizing gaming, and now that the bill has actually been presented and is processing, Louisiana has a lot to worry about.

Other very prominent states are Illinois, New York, California, and Massachusetts. Strange for how large Florida is, it normally is contained to only what goes on inside Florida.
