new york state's GDP in 2008 was 1.14 trillion. that is the entire state. no way in hell 1 city alone has that output. california has the highest gdp of any state at 1.8 trillion

I'm pretty sure those stats were for the metro area--in which case, yes, NYC has a metro that is about the same population as the entire state of New York.
Take it you've never actually been to any of those cities. You'd be surprised at how cool they are.

If the UK's economic output is a trillion over NYC's then doesn't that defeat your point since London accounts for a majority of the UK's economic output? Your list just proves the two cities are pretty close.

You may have found low rent where you live (which can be accomplished in most cities), but London is not a 1/3 the cost to live in compared to NYC. In fact, London is actually more expensive than NYC overall. Checkout the link below.
There are multiple studies out there where London ranks high. So, this may not be the end-all be-all, but there's no way London is that cheap to live in.
I prefer London's architecture over NYC's, because I prefer details and the beauty of craftsmanship. I also like to see the sky and agree that it's nice to be able to see the amazing historical architecture in the city. When I lived there around 2000 - 01, I worked at a Solicitor's office about 5 blocks from St. Paul's and could see it from my window. Amazing.
Well in London you can easily live with 1000$/moth. And most people live with that amount of money!
In NYC with those money you pay your rent!
I agree with what you're saying. The only difference is the large disparity between the rich and the poor in some countries (some cities in China and S. America). There are shanty towns connected to some of these cities. That's not to say these cities aren't amazing (I love Sao Paulo).
In contrast, I believe America is headed there fast with our failing economy and miserable government. The middle class is being wiped out more and more, however, countries like China are working the other way (up the ladder) in this regard.
LOL? NYC's people live more miserable lives than the people in a lot of those cities! In NYC half of the people struggle to pay their rent and to live paycheck to paycheck... that's not happening in too many places around the world! (developed countries... but even in the developing countries)
I'm British. I am pro Britannia and will die for my country. I currently live in NYC as a consultant. And let me say unequivocally, that New York City DESTROYS my home town of London. For one, the weather sucks in London. Dreary day upon dreary day. Second, NYC has an energy on a Tuesday night that London wishes it could replicate on a weekend. Thirdly, the food in London sucks. Sure, we can get a good curry, but overall, no contest (reference the Euro-centric Michelin guide for reference). Yes, London is cleaner. Probably safer. It's more historic. But it's damn expensive. The prices make NYC seem like Tulsa. Any day of the week would I choose NYC as the superior city. The people are nicer. Better looking. While London is incredibly diverse, NYC is better integrated. And for what its worth, every Londoner I know who has visited NYC prefers it to London, overall. So any Yank here who tries to convince other people that London is better; mate, you're a liar, cause youve never been to Londonstan - if you had, you would never claim that London is better. Unless you're miserably jealous of NYC - in which case, I dont blame ya. Greatest city on the planet. Cheers.
Hey Milkdrinker - why are all you fellow yanks so jealous of NYC? You all should be proud you have such an amazing world class city in your country. NYC is on a level your second tier cities like LA Chicago and SF could only pray to be. Sorry, folks, if you dis NY, you dis your country.
