Actually, the US census has Oakland at 409,189 people as of 2009, which is up from 408,000 people the year before. The California Department of Finance has Oakland at 430,666 people as of 2010 as well. The CA dept. of finance was closer to reality with its estimates than the census was, in the years leading up to the 2000 census, so theres reason to believe they're pretty accurate these days too.

Okland is an incredible city of it's own, but the fact it's just mere minutes away on BART or by car from San Francisco and the rest of the bay area gives it a huge advantage.

both of these cities are wayyyy high up on the 'dangerous cities' list this year. nonetheless, i really like both of them and wouldn't mind living in either. i guess i'd vote for oakland based on location.

Cleveland is a better city than Oakland in my opinion. Oakland isn't the cultural and economic center of its metro the way Cleveland is, so Cleveland offers considerably more than Oakland. However, I'd live in Oakland over Cleveland any day since Cleveland does not have a San Francisco 15 minutes away.

Oakland is the cultural center of the East Bay

• Oakland Ballet
• Oakland East Bay Symphony
• Oakland Museum- the world class museum(and only museum) totally devoted to the natural sciences, history, arts, and culture of California
• Has more artists per capita than any other city in the United States, outside of New York City.
• Paramount theater, Fox Theater - historical theaters
• Chabot Space and Science Center
• Coliseum Complex - the premier center for concerts and events

Also the economic center of the East Bay

• the Port of Oakland is responsible for
nearly 200,000 jobs related to it's maritime activities.
• Home to several major corporations

I agree with this. Cleveland is the center of it's region and the respective focal point for arts, sports, entertainment, and culture. There is simply more to do in Cleveland because of this. Oakland has the advantage when taking into consideration the entire metro area because the Bay Area is awesome.

History - Cleveland
Demographics - Oakland
Location - Oakland
Cityscape - Cleveland
Landscape - Oakland
Recent Development - Cleveland
Transportation - Cleveland has better rail transit coverage within the city, but BART as a whole is better than Cleveland's RTA.
Economy - Cleveland
Culture - Cleveland
Importance to region - Cleveland
Climate - Oakland
Attractions/Tourism - Cleveland, unless you are counting the metro.

Cleveland seems more alluring for me ... a beautiful city with absolute WORLD CLASS AMENITIES, a rich history, attractive living areas and suburbs, and a much more reasonable cost of living.
Another BIG PLUS for me ... not enduring those California disasters like firestorms, mudslides and earthquakes.
The city exudes a charming quality and a sense of prominence all it's own ... I love it here in Cleveland!

Cleveland is "vastly" underrated!

Oakland sound and looks pretty cool! I not trying to discount Oakland, but compare to Cleveland:
  • Oakland Ballet
Cleveland no longer has a city Ballet...ceased in 2000. However, we do have such organizations as Cleveland Opera, Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Cleveland Public Theater
  • Oakland East Bay Symphony
Cleveland Orchestra -- enough said. Annually ranked at the top in the world. Chicago Symphony Tops U.S. Orchestras : NPR
  • Oakland Museum- the world class museum(and only museum) totally devoted to the natural sciences, history, arts, and culture of California
As you may have guessed, Cleveland has TONS of musuems:

1) Cleveland Musuem of Art

2) Rock and Roll HOF

3) Cleveland Museum of Natural History
4) Cleveland Botanical Gardens
5) Dittrick Medical Museum
6) International Women's Air and Space Museum
7) NASA Glenn Research Center Visitor's Center
8) U.S.S. Cod Submarine Museum
9) "A Christmas Story" House and Museum

10) Federal Reserve Money Museum
11) Hungarian Heritage Museum
12) Ukranian Museum
13) Western Reserve Historical Society Museum
14) President Garfield Monument and Museum
15) Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA!)
16) Children's Museum
17) Cleveland Gray's Armory Museum
18) Soldier's and Sailors Civil War Monument
19) Great Lakes Science Center
20) Steamer William G. Mather Museum
  • Has more artists per capita than any other city in the United States, outside of New York City.
Impressive! Cleveland has a growing artist scene because of cheap loft space, but no where near those numbers.
  • Paramount theater, Fox Theater - historical theaters
Cleveland has no shortage of Historical Theaters:

Palace Theater (built 1922)
Hanna Theater (built 1921)
Ohio Theater (built 1921)
State Theater (built 1921)
Allen Theater (built 1921)
14th St. Theater

Playhouse Sqaure is the largest performing arts center outside New York City (eclipsed only by Lincoln Center)

Severance Hall (Cleveland Orchestra) (built 1931):

• Chabot Space and Science Center

Cleveland has:

1) Great Lakes Science Center and IMAX Theater

2) NASA Glenn Research Center

• Coliseum Complex - the premier center for concerts and events

Cleveland has:

Cleveland Browns Stadium
The "Q" (where the Cavs play)
Progressive Field (Cleveland Indians)
Severance Hall (Cleveland Orchestra)
Wolstein Center (Cleveland State Basketball
Cleveland Convention Center (built 1920's)
Playhouse Square Theaters

• the Port of Oakland is responsible for
nearly 200,000 jobs related to it's maritime activities.

That's impressive. Downtown Cleveland has about 100,000 daytime workers. Our biggest job market is Healthcare with over 100,000 employed in the metro. Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals are the city's largest employers.

• Home to several major corporations

Same here.

Over 20 in the Fortune 1000 in Northeast Ohio. Progressive Insurance, Sherwin Williams, American Greetings, Eaton Corp, TRW, Parker Hannifin, Lubrizol, KeyCorp,

Nearby Akron has Goodyear and Firestone
