I don't find it outrageous for MA to be mentioned, but I do find it outrageous for it to be so far ahead of NY in this poll. I think CA/MA/NY are about on par with each other.
Sorry, I should say that I think NJ and CT have good schools, but I think that NY, PA, and IL have a greater quantity of good schools, so I would place those states well above NJ and CT.

Yep, without a doubt. KidPhilly listed some good PA ones and for IL:

University of Chicago
Northwestern
University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana
Illinois Institute of Technology
Depaul University
Loyola University
Southern Illinois University-Carbondale
Illinois State University
Illinois Wesleyan

I think PA and IL have CT and NJ beat.

The question is what state has the the best universities.

The best University is far and away Harvard so even if every other school in MA was terrible it would still have the best university.

If the question read "What state has the most respectable universities?" than perhaps there would be some debate.

Thats why I voted for Mass.

1. Massachusetts
2. California
3. New York
4. Pennsylvania
5. Illinois

New Jersey, Ohio, and Connecticut have a good collection of schools too. Rhode Island, New Hampshire and Maine are impressive considering how small they are.
