I think the point here is that, in the Research Triangle, there is actually active back and forth collaboration, commuting, etc. among the various communities and universities involving tens of thousands of people daily.
People in Raleigh work in Durham. People in Durham work in Raleigh. People in Cary work in Chapel Hill. Students and researchers at one of the universities access other university and industry resources and vice versa. The Research Triangle Park is a hub of activity that is fed from all communities within the Triangle. It's a much different dynamic than what happens among cities that are located hours apart. Any three cities anywhere can call themselves a triangle but that doesn't mean that they have the same dynamics as the Research Triangle.
Like everyone else who has responded to this (and quite possibly everyone in the world except the OP a d whoever wrote that article) I have never heard of the "Triple A Triangle".
that info comes straight from Google maps. Mapquest probably says the same
I've never driven myself from Atlanta to Augusta; I've always been with family when we took those countless trips back and forth. from what I can remember, we didn't speed but did the speed limit...so Google is pretty much on point as far as I can remember it. But if you're hauling butt down I-20 like there's no tomorrow, then yeah, I guess it will only take 2 hrs

Those sources are notoriously slow. I've driven that shlep more times than I care to remember; I have a daughter in Augusta. Going 78 MPH (which I normally do) and barring accidents and construction...2 hrs on the nose to I-520.

Some of suburban counties of metro Augusta and metro Atlanta are only 45 minutes to 1 hour apart... Mcduffie/Columbia County and Newton/Rockdale County aren't far apart at all...
The cities are about 2 hrs apart from each other....

and that would be above the limit, wouldn't it?
all I know is that going from family in west atlanta to family in west richmond county was closer to 3 hrs than 2. on average.
