I can't stand those things. I rather wear a hoodie.

No. Most buppies that I know have never been into any of these scenes/music genres outside of the mainstream, " I like Linkin Park and Marroon Five" and even then thats is suspect. Anybody who into the rest of that superficial stuff like Range Rovers and stuff like Fraternities that typify buppies probably mostly listened to Urban music and ventured off here and there. None of the black people I know ,professional or not, that are into alternative music rarely fit into any of those traits you mentioned but they can be professionals and yes, they are still black.

This is wrong too. Buppies and Yuppies in general are known for living beyond their means and racking up credit card debt and car loan debt to keep up with the friends they graduated college with.

Those are wannabe buppies; there is a different [too many people in my family are wannabes]. My cousin went out and spent over 500 dollars on clothes and had the nerve to ask my mom for 500 to pay for her rent!

She dresses nice, good weave, nice car and nice home, but her ass be struggling! lol

Geez, if you didn't get the tongue and cheek nature of the list then you need a humor transplant. As for the music thing, every buppie I know has gone through at least one of them whether they admit to it or not. Also, last time I checked, linking a certain style of music had nothing to do with your skin color...

While its true that buppies/yuppies have crazy debt from school, cars, houses, and non-essential essential yuppie toys one other trait of a yuppie/buppie is easy access to credit due earning a high wage. Credit companies LOVE yuppies, and yuppies often use it to their misguided advantage.

I don't think however that it is accurate to portray yuppies/buppies as archetypically being close to financial ruin due to credit debt. Not to say it doesn't happen at all, but that is more typical of people who aren't yuppies. Some call them "30k millionaires", and other not really nice things.

I thought buppie was black urban professional. If that's the only category then I thought I did fit into that category, even though I techincally live in the suburbs of DC (I'm only 3 miles from the Potomac). Seems like the qualifications are based on blanket steretypes. Some of the buppie qualifications would be things that anyone with the means to do so would do.

Owning a Range Rover is one of my life goals. Right now just driving an older but still big SUV. Could never go back to a small compact car. A reasonable Nissan Pathfinder or Chevy Trailblazer will be my next car while I get my finances in order for that big Range Rover.

White zinfandel is my fav wine.

I love Seinfeld. Yes the guy who plays Kramer isn't a friend, but the show was still pretty darn good. quoteable? "master of my domain" "festivus for the rest of us" "man hands" I never got into Friends.

I like Whole Foods for their lunch buffet. I like to get fresh lamb curry in a hurry. But regular shopping is at regular grocery stores like Giant, Harris Teeter, and Safeway.

I live in a neighborhood that was once considered the hood, now its transitioning so one could argue that I'm part of the gentrifying. However, it'd be a weak argument considering that I'm not exactly bringing a truckload of income or really changing the demographics.

I wanted to live in Europe for years. Although my fantasy city was either Barcelona or Prague.

I did go through a punkish phase as a teenager and I like all kinds of music. But mostly light pop stuff. Can only name a handful of rappers.

And yes, I love my iphone.

To get back on topic. Any of those cities are fine for black urban professionals. Of course I have to root for the hometeam and say DC.

I like DC. There's plenty of opportunities here career wise. This is one of the most educated cities in the country so there's plenty of good company. There's always something going on here and its not overwhelming like New York or LA.

New York is well New York. Its the ultimate city but I couldn't live there too many people too much everything but love to take a trip there. Have to go there once a year it seems.

Atlanta is great too. I think there are more varied career oppotunities in DC though. Really out of the 3 its not which is a good choice but what matters to you. Do you want warm weather? Atlanta. Do you hate driving? NYC. Do you have a really specific career path? DC. Do you like the arts but hate driving? DC. So it really depends on taste. All 3 rock for different reasons.

You would be surprised. Young professionals are not yet used to making real money or budgeting.

Difference between young professionals and those wannabes though is that the latter usually lacks a higher education and their jobs pay probably pay a little above minimum wage.

The ones you know are very different from the ones I know. They would not listen to any of that unless it became "cool" or came on a top 40 station.

Never once said it did, but as a person who actually participate/has participated in the local scenes of said genres, the number of black at the shows is still very low. It is often enough to count on one hand even in Atlanta.
