DC native here lemme just spread some insight.

1. Yes we are the odd ball of the BosWash corridor, why are we the oddballs? Well for one D.C. is a southern city, Baltimore is too but it feels and looks just like a smaller Philly. D.C. is the odd ball city of the entire country. Everyone thats not from here thinks the DC area is weird, I've been told that time and time again.

2. We are the only major city in the country not to have skyscrapers.

3. A lot of housing stock can be considered cookie cutter in the suburbs and the outer parts of the city.

4. D.C. is a southern city, but I don't consider myself a southerner or a northerner, I'm just from D.C.
Now why don't I consider myself southern? Because honestly even Virginia seems like a culture shock, let alone going to South VA and other points south, it just feels weird to me. The north seems weird too, I don't know how to describe it but northerners are about as weird as southerners. To us D.C. people who are actually from here, everyone else is weird to us. Its not a bad thing but its just how it is and vice versa.

5. D.C. maybe the only city to not have any poor white people. I mean in my 20+ years of living in DC I've only came across 3 white families that are low income. Go to any other BosWash city and there are low income white neighborhoods. I actually wish D.C. did have lower income people of other races because it seems like everyone automatically blames black people in this city for EVERYTHING thats negative. Food stamps? Black people Welfare? Black people Someone got shot last night? Black people Graffiti? Black or Hispanic etccc so on and so forth. Police here profile black men more than any other city. When I go to certain neighborhoods in D.C. or in certain restaurants or stores people give off the vibe that you shouldn't be there. lol. I love and HATE D.C. so much.

D.C. is the odd ball city of the BosWash region, the United States of America, and the world.

Umm, no. It's classified as like 90% urban and very developed.

These were the urban population percentages for the NE states last I checked.

(Note these are from 2000 except NY, so it'd be a bit higher by now)
ME-40% Pop-1,318,301
NH-59% Pop-1,324,575
VT-38% Pop-621,760
MA-91% Pop-6,593,587
RI-91% Pop-1,053,209
CT-88% Pop-3,518,288
NY-89-92% Pop-19,541,253
NJ-94% Pop-8,707,739
PA-77% Pop-12,604,767

And these are their rankings in population density.

NJ-1 1,174 persons per sq. mi.
RI-2 1,008
MA-3 841
CT-4 726.2
-
MD
-5 583.1
DE-6 453
-
NY
-7 413.9
PA-10 281.2
NH-20/21 147.7 (Equal with South Carolina)
VT-30 67.22
ME-38 47.72

I always thought Baltimore was the odd ball not because it’s doesn’t fit in but it’s smaller and not as international as the other the cities.

The deep south has different definition it's often every state in south besides VA, KY, WV OK and TX, with that said NC, TN and AR are often in the deep south genius. Let me point out metro ATL by itself has more people than half the states you name to say you don’t like GA over 9 mil for the same reasons you don’t like MS, SC and AL 3 and 4 mil is silly. You believe that GA is that slow paced? you don’t even believe that your dang self quit lying to your self. I get now what you do is some how divide the deep south, than take 3 slow pace states, and one the most cosmopolitan states in south and exploited stereotypes with all four. I’m actually amazed that you don’t view the south as whole as monolithic but you still stop short and left the deep monolithic, failed.

And it’s funny because the term “New South” was coin by a Atlantan, for many large cities in the south it’s like a manifesto but to Atlanta it part of the city identity. Which is a gift and a curse but to compared places that obliviously never hand this in mind to the cradle of movement is wow. But again your obsession with Atlanta.

Why do people always lump DC with everybody else. WE HATE THAT! We are midatlantic! Not northeastern or southern. We have nothing in common with either thank goodness. DC is DC and we don't claim any of you. Anybody who has been here knows this. We are the most unique city in the country in every area and we want to keep it that way. We normally have to try no to call people bamas in other places since they are different from us.

Also, DC has the second highest number of National Historic Landmarks in the U.S. after NYC.
