I think people just end up moving to NYC from there if they want more city life, better entertainment, media market, the ultimate urban environment in North America, etc. Most people in SF think NYC is amazing, but some surely think it is the center of the world. It is one of, if not the only "real functioning dense world class city" west of the Mississippi River, so for most people they don't have that much to compare it to unless they go to Philly, NYC, Boston, Chicago, DC, Toronto, Montreal which are all equal to or better/bigger urban environs than SF. NYC is one of the top 1-5 urban environs in the world, SF probably in the 30-40 range, but top 5 in US.

Reason #1.
NYC has 24/7 public transit and its EXTENSIVE as hell and its a set fare, not based on distance like BART and WMATA.

Reason #2.
NYC has more things to do, its a much bigger city with people and more area.

REASON #3.
You can't beat the energy of the city, it never sleeps, always something going on and stores that are open 24/7. Also the serve alcohol around the clock.

REASON #4.
City is much more diverse.

REASON #5.
Better restaurants and food.

REASON #6.
Better shopping.

I don't feel the need to go on.

I'm trying to figure this out... what does NY have that the bay doesn't? Other than a gigantic skyline, what can you find in Manhattan that you can't find in SF? Let's not get into a brands discussion either... what amenity can you get in NY that you can't get in the bay area? If this is going to be a discussion then people need to say why they believe one's better than the other.

Reason #4 is just plain wrong... Reason #5 is subjective.

Please specify these "much more things to do".

You can't have a snowball fight in the winter time in the bay area, or go in the water, ever.
