The total land area in Miami-Dade is 1946 square miles.
Yes you are correct. Although Miami-Dade county is 1,946 sq. miles only about 23% of that is habitable due to the Everglades to our west, in addition to water conservation areas and the Urban Development Boundary line established in the 1970s which prohibits any development past US Highway 27/ Krome Avenue.
If Miami consolidated it would be one of the largest cities in the nation without a doubt.

Excellent thread HtownLove. You know what city I live in. You also know that Houston ranks 3rd on the list that you calculated. Great way to look at things. It makes you think a little differently. Thanks for the thread.

Don't feel too bad down there in Florida... In GA our larger counties are only about 400-500 sq mi.

Ya'll sure have a whole lot of tiny counties in Georgia. That would seem to be a really inefficient model. That's a lot of separate local governments that have to be run and supported by the local tax payers.

Only true if it was the only one to consolidate. If every city consolidated with its county Sacramento would be 25th (going by kidphilly's link). San Diego would be 5th.

Well you are right... it causes tons of planning problems mostly... no one walks to the beat of a single drum... and god-forbid two different sections of a county develop... people want to split the counties into even smaller ones.

The only reason it hasn't happened is many years ago they put a law on the books preventing more than 159 counties in the state of Georgia.

I will say this about efficiency though... It is good in some areas... Most people depend on the County for most of their services, rather than a city or townships. The county sizes are about right for running efficient school districts, police forces, and fire departments.

Compared to states like NJ when you have so many tiny isolated school and police districts in every town... it is highly efficient.

But the transportation planning issues.... oh it makes you want to . Even our local arterial roads don't connect between counties very well. Most people are limited to interstates, US and state highways to go from county to county.

If St. Louis city & county merged it would have 1,350,000 people in 570 sq miles. With a population density of 2,368 people per sq mi. So that's a pretty big population with a decent population density that's comparable to some cities. It would still be more densely populated than Memphis is currently.
But just like Baltimore, St Louis is an independent city--not part of any county. So for such a consolidation to occur, two things would need to happen: The city of St Louis would have to drop its "independent city" status and become another city in St Louis County (this is possible in the future). And it would have to merge with the county into one government entity (this is not at all likely).

BTW, besides St Louis and Baltimore, there are a few other independent cities, including Reno and several in Virginia.
