I think LA may be the current music capital though, because that is where the industry is pretty much based, right?
yeah, by the 50's Detroit was known even more for their music than their cars.

I have to vote Detroit as well. Not even counting in all the unbelievable names coming out of Detroit (Eminem, The White Stripes, Motown, Bob Seger, Kid Rock, etc.), a lot of people forget that Detroit is the birthplace of techno music. They have a great techno festival called MOVEMENT every Memorial Day weekend.

yeah, used to be that most of the record holders for the Grammys came out of Detroit.

Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklyn used to be the artists with the most wins. Now they are just giving them out. I can't believe Beyonce has won more grammys in her 10 year career than Ella Fitzgerald in her stellar 60 year career, and that Kanye West has won more than Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney

I see no reason that DC should be one of the choices.
The music capital -- as far as being a hotbed of everything music, from recording studios to the city of origin of many popular music acts-- is LA. NYC is a close second.

I don't know how to order them they each have strong and weak points but top players are probably
NYC
LA
Detroit
Minneapolis
Nashville
Miami

Depending on how much you weigh different criteria you could make cases for any one of these cities. I'm inclined to say Nashville, Detroit, and NYC are just a little above Minneapolis and LA and I think Miami is probably at the bottom of the top list.

Don't underestimate Nashville, here are a few:
-Garth Brooks
-Willie Nelson
-Shania Twain
-Dolly Parton
-Jimi Hendrix
-Johnny Cash
-Towns van Zandt
-Little Richard
-Donna Summer
-Kesha
-Carrie Underwood
-Taylor Swift
-Faith Hill
-Kings of Leon
-Martina McBride

I'll go with New York City. That place has so much quantity and variety of music going on it's mind-boggling. It's the cream of the crop. LA is second.

I voted for NYC but overall I'd say:

1. NYC
2. Detroit
3. LA

Nashville might be in there somewhere but that's not really my thing.
