As a place to live... Detroit.

I've lived there and Omaha. I love new Orleans, but wouldn't want to live their.
And to be fair I have no experience with St Louis and KC

In 2021:

the best downtown: Kansas City
architecture: New Orleans
Charm: New Orleans
Safety: Omaha
Shopping: Detroit
Nightlife: New Orleans
Bright Future: Omaha and Kansas City

I'd ranks these like this, in 2021 and based on the criteria given:

1 New Orleans - the French Quarter and surrounding areas make this a top choice based on the criteria, overall.
2 Kansas City - great downtown and a very livable, nicer than expected overall city
3 Detroit - midtown is incredible again and downtown is coming back really well. Surrounding suburbs are excellent, mostly
4 Omaha - a safe, growing nice city with a strong economy
5 St Louis - a city that once had a dominant stance in the US with economy, status, livability and safety. It is declining and fading a bit now and crime is way up

How does Kansas City's downtown beat out New Orleans'?

I've visited and researched these cities and metros for ranking purposed for many years. Weighing everything to varying degrees and the weight that each city carries each category, Kansas City and Omaha win this pretty easily (IMO), objectively speaking.

Omaha is the safest.
I’m guessing New Orleans has the best nightlife.
Love Kansas City’s downtown and architecture in the older parts of the city.
Saint Louis looks a whole lot better if you include it’s suburbs, as does Detroit.

Overall livability:
Omaha
Kansas City
St. Louis

Detroit

New Orleans

Personal preference is similar, but:
Kansas City
Omaha
Saint Louis
Detroit
...
